Toyota Yaris Cross (2021-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| The hybrid sips fuel, especially around town | Quite cramped in the back |
| Promises first-rate reliability you'd expect of Toyota | The 4x4 version has less luggage room |
| Lots of boot space for a small car | Not as much fun to drive as a Ford Puma |
Quick Summary
The Toyota Yaris Cross (2021-present) is a compact SUV that combines the town-friendly footprint of a small hatchback with interior space for a young family and a tall seating position for easy visibility. Based on the popular Yaris hatchback, it features chunky, fresh styling and a well-built interior with high-quality plastics. The car is available exclusively with a traditional hybrid powertrain—a 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with an electric motor and battery delivering 114bhp, or 128bhp in upgraded versions. With 397 litres of boot space and individually folding rear seats on most models, it offers practical versatility for everyday use.
The Yaris Cross delivers between 55-60mpg in everyday driving, with urban driving particularly benefiting from its hybrid system through regenerative braking. Servicing costs are reasonable at Toyota dealers, and the engine uses a metal timing chain rather than a rubber belt, eliminating expensive replacement costs. Whilst the ride quality is slightly firm and body lean is noticeable due to its extra height, the car remains pleasant to drive with precise steering. It's a reliable, cost-effective choice for those prioritising dependability and fuel economy, though it lacks the driving engagement of rivals like the Ford Puma.
Best for: Buyers seeking a compact SUV with excellent reliability, low running costs, and hybrid efficiency; families wanting a tall, practical car for town and motorway driving.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising driving involvement, maximum rear-seat space, or the most versatile boot configuration; drivers wanting a more engaging driving experience.

The Verdict
You should buy the Yaris Cross if: You're seeking a compact SUV with excellent reliability, low running costs, and hybrid efficiency; you want a tall, practical car for families and commuters.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise driving involvement, maximum rear-seat space, or the most versatile boot configuration; you want a more engaging driving experience.
Competitive Position: The Toyota Yaris Cross is a solid contender in the compact SUV market, offering exceptional reliability, impressive fuel economy, and practical versatility. Whilst the Ford Puma edges ahead with superior driving dynamics and expert ratings, the Yaris Cross remains an excellent choice for those prioritising dependability and running costs. Its hybrid powertrain delivers real-world efficiency, particularly in urban driving, and Toyota's reputation for longevity provides valuable peace of mind. The Renault Captur offers more versatility, but the Yaris Cross's superior build quality and hybrid technology make it a compelling option for cost-conscious buyers seeking a reliable, efficient compact SUV.

5 Overall rating
(3 reviews)The car is of a good value. Everything seems to work well except the automatic parking functionality.
Heads up option. I like the hybrid recharging and don't want a battery only car.Long journeys mean recharging. I like the driving position of an SUV and dont need the size of my RAV 4 still!
I like the AWD version though I think all of the hybrid cars in SUV form are expensive and I will wait before changing my diesel RAV AWD.
