Vauxhall ADAM (2013-2019) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Quirky style | Underwhelming to drive |
| A very cheap used car | Very small inside |
| You're unlikely to find two exactly alike | No five-door version |
Quick Summary
The Vauxhall ADAM (2013-2019) is Vauxhall's quirky take on the customisable supermini trend, offering seemingly endless combinations of exterior trim, interior upholstery, and personalisation options. As a three-door hatchback, it prioritises style over practicality, with a cramped rear and tiny 170-litre boot, making it better suited as a second car rather than a family vehicle. The cabin features decent quality materials and a funky design that matches the car's unconventional exterior aesthetic.
Driving dynamics are underwhelming compared to rivals like the MINI and Ford Fiesta, with a bumpy ride and uninspiring handling. Engine options range from a wimpy 1.2-litre with 69bhp to a more engaging turbocharged 1.0-litre with 114bhp introduced in 2014, and the Adam S with a 1.4-litre turbo producing 148bhp. Running costs are low thanks to the small engines and affordable insurance groups, with the 1.0-litre turbo achieving around 60mpg officially. The Adam Rocks variant, launched in 2014, offers a raised ride height and chunky styling, whilst the Rocks Air features a canvas folding roof. As a used buy, the ADAM represents excellent value for style-conscious buyers seeking an affordable, unique supermini.
Best for: Buyers prioritising quirky style and individuality, those seeking a very affordable supermini, and drivers wanting a distinctive second car.
Not ideal for: Families needing practicality, drivers seeking engaging handling, or those requiring a five-door configuration.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vauxhall ADAM | 3/5 | 3.8/5 | 34.4% | 3.9/5 |
| Ford Fiesta | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 32.7% | 4.4/5 |
| Fiat 500 | 3/5 | 4.8/5 | 34.8% | 4.2/5 |
| MINI Hatch | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 35.9% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the ADAM if: You prioritise quirky style and individuality, seek a very affordable supermini, or want a distinctive second car that stands out from the crowd.
Consider alternatives if: You need practicality for family use, desire engaging handling dynamics, or require a five-door configuration.
Competitive Position: The Vauxhall ADAM (2013-2019) is a style-focused supermini that appeals to the heart rather than the head. Whilst it underperforms rivals like the Ford Fiesta for driving dynamics and the MINI for premium appeal, its exceptional affordability and seemingly endless customisation options make it an excellent value proposition for buyers seeking a unique, characterful car. The Fiat 500 offers similar styling appeal but at a higher price point, whilst the MINI commands a significant premium. For budget-conscious buyers wanting a distinctive supermini with personality, the ADAM represents outstanding value, though practicality compromises mean it's best suited as a second vehicle rather than a primary family car.

3.8 Overall rating
(5 reviews)Love the 2 tone on the Adam I NEED AUTOMATIC
Not the smoothest of rides .. Butc very responsive easy to drive. Good dash board not roomy. But small child at back on booster fine. Early days
Design is very stylish and the driving position was ideal for me being short 45. The handling is not brilliant but its acceptable but unfortunately although the car I bought had low milage upon delivery the engine dropped a valve and as so the engine is currently being rebuilt so reliability is seemingly a bit of an issue but thats typical in my experience of vauxhall.
Really pleased with the whole car. Very solid for a small car. Excellent value
Absolutely love it, a Vauxhall Adam was the best decision I’ve ever made….
