Quick Summary
The eighth-generation Vauxhall Astra, now under Stellantis ownership, offers a comprehensive and well-rounded package in the family hatchback class. Sharing its platform with the Peugeot 308, it boasts a modern, chiselled design with the distinctive ‘Vauxhall Vizor’. A wide range of powertrains is available, including a 1.2-litre turbo petrol, a 143bhp mild hybrid, plug-in hybrids (up to 222bhp in GSe form), and a 154bhp pure electric variant, the Astra-e, with an official range of 256 miles. It's available as a five-door hatchback or a more spacious Sports Tourer estate.
The Astra provides a confident and relaxed driving experience, with a particularly comfortable ride that soaks up bumps effectively. Its cabin is user-friendly, featuring a 10.0-inch touchscreen and physical controls for key functions. While practicality is good for a family car, with a 422-litre boot in the hatchback (or 597 litres in the Sports Tourer), some rivals offer more rear passenger space. Running costs are competitive, with good fuel economy for petrol models and the potential for very low costs with the electric version, especially with off-peak charging.
Best for: Drivers seeking a well-equipped, comfortable, and versatile family car with a choice of petrol, hybrid, or electric powertrains, and those who appreciate a user-friendly cabin.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising maximum rear-seat practicality, best-in-class handling dynamics, or class-leading EV/PHEV electric range.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict
You should buy the Astra if: You're looking for a well-equipped, comfortable, and versatile family car with a choice of petrol, hybrid, or electric powertrains, or if you appreciate a user-friendly cabin.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum rear-seat practicality, the finest handling dynamics, or class-leading electric range from an EV or PHEV.
Competitive Position: The latest Vauxhall Astra is a strong contender in the family hatchback market, offering good value with its generous standard equipment and a wide array of powertrains to suit various needs. Its comfortable ride and user-friendly interior make it a pleasant daily driver. While it excels in comfort and versatility, rivals such as the VW Golf and Mazda 3 might offer a more engaging driving experience, and cars like the Seat Leon and Skoda Octavia provide greater practicality. Despite its strengths, it lacks a singular unique selling point in a highly competitive segment.

4.2 Overall rating
(52 reviews)The car is working great No issues, minor scratches expected, very clean inside Would recommend Happy as
I turned up they had pressure washed the engine, it was dry when I inspected before taking it for a test drive. When I drove off test drived got back it was smoking everywhere and the man tried to tell me it was spilt engine oil.... It was not!
I wanted to buy this car but I observed from my research that one of its issues is oil leakage which is either coming from its engine or gear box components. Its also not so cheap to fix as it cannot be ignored.
ive got astra 2.0 cdti elite 13 reg never had any problems withit in 6 years been a joy to own
The car is a good deal for the money. I like it
