Vauxhall Meriva (2010-2017) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Fantastically flexible	Rather dull to drive
Innovative rear-hinged rear doors	Entry-level cars are poorly equipped and underpowered
Economical diesel engines	Not the most stylish car to look at

Quick Summary

The Vauxhall Meriva (2010-2017) is a practical compact MPV that prioritises flexibility and accessibility over driving excitement. This second-generation model shares much with the Vauxhall Corsa but offers a taller body and considerably more interior space. Every version features innovative FlexDoors that open particularly wide with rear doors hinged at the rear, making it exceptionally easy to access the cabin and fit child seats. The FlexSpace seating system allows outer rear seats to move backwards, forwards, or diagonally inwards, creating two-, three-, four- and five-seat configurations with a generous 397-litre boot.

The Meriva is straightforward to drive with light, responsive controls and predictable handling, though some engines lack power. Diesel engines, particularly the 1.6-litre CDTi, offer excellent fuel economy of around 50-55mpg in real-world driving. Running costs are low, with most versions featuring timing chains and service intervals of one year or 20,000 miles. Aim for Exclusiv specification or above to ensure air-conditioning and safety features like curtain airbags. As a used car, it represents excellent value for those seeking a practical alternative to standard family hatchbacks.

Best for: Families prioritising practicality and flexibility, those needing easy access and child seat installation, and budget-conscious buyers seeking a spacious compact MPV.

Not ideal for: Drivers seeking an engaging driving experience, those wanting premium styling, or buyers requiring well-equipped entry-level models.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Meriva if: You're prioritising practicality and flexibility, need easy access and child seat installation, or seek an affordable, spacious compact MPV on a budget.

Consider alternatives if: You want an engaging driving experience, premium styling, or well-equipped entry-level models with more power.

Competitive Position: The Vauxhall Meriva (2010-2017) is a strong contender in the compact MPV market, offering exceptional practicality and affordability. Whilst the Ford B-Max edges ahead with superior expert ratings and overall appeal, the Meriva's innovative FlexDoors and FlexSpace seating system remain unmatched for flexibility. It compares favourably to the Nissan Note in terms of value and user satisfaction, though both lag behind the B-Max. For budget-conscious families prioritising practicality over driving dynamics, the Meriva represents excellent value, particularly in well-specified Exclusiv trim or above with economical diesel engines.
