Vauxhall Meriva (2010-2017) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Fantastically flexible | Rather dull to drive |
| Innovative rear-hinged rear doors | Entry-level cars are poorly equipped and underpowered |
| Economical diesel engines | Not the most stylish car to look at |
Quick Summary
The Vauxhall Meriva (2010-2017) is a compact multi-purpose vehicle that prioritises practicality above all else. This second-generation model shares much with the Vauxhall Corsa but pairs the compact size of a small hatchback with a taller body and exceptionally flexible interior. Every version features FlexDoors that open particularly wide with rear doors hinged at the rear, making child seat installation straightforward. The FlexSpace seating system allows outer rear seats to move backwards, forwards, or diagonally inwards, creating two-, three-, four-, and five-seat configurations with a 397-litre boot that easily outperforms rivals like the Ford Focus.
The Meriva is straightforward to drive with light, responsive controls and predictable handling, though some engines lack power. Diesel engines, particularly the 1.6-litre CDTi, offer excellent economy with real-world figures of 50-55mpg, whilst petrols average around 42-46mpg depending on specification. Running costs are low with timing chains on most petrol and diesel variants reducing maintenance expenses. However, specification matters considerably—aim for Exclusiv trim or above for air-conditioning and safety features, and avoid underpowered entry-level engines. As an affordable, practical alternative to standard family hatchbacks, it represents excellent value for those prioritising flexibility and economy.
Best for: Families seeking maximum practicality and flexibility, those needing easy access for child seats, and budget-conscious buyers wanting economical transport.
Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising engaging handling, those seeking a stylish exterior, or buyers wanting well-equipped entry-level models.

The Verdict
You should buy the Meriva if: You're seeking maximum practicality and flexibility, need easy access for child seats, or want an affordable, economical family vehicle.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise engaging handling, desire a stylish exterior, or require well-equipped entry-level models as standard.
Competitive Position: The Vauxhall Meriva (2010-2017) is an excellent choice for practicality-focused buyers, offering innovative FlexDoors and FlexSpace seating that rivals struggle to match. Whilst the Ford B-Max scores higher for expert rating and the Peugeot 3008 offers more premium appeal, the Meriva delivers superior value and flexibility at a lower price point. It outperforms the Nissan Note in user satisfaction and overall rating. For families prioritising space, accessibility, and economy over driving dynamics or style, the Meriva represents outstanding value in the compact MPV segment.

(12 reviews)Customers say
Overall, the Vauxhall Meriva is well-regarded for its comfort and spacious interior, making it a solid choice for families. Owners appreciate the smooth ride and responsive turbo engine power. However, some drivers feel that it lacks speed and the steering isn't very engaging, which can take away from the fun of driving.

What people say
It is a very nice car, it is comfortable, drives smoothly and is the perfect family car. Plenty of boot space for shopping and luggage, also is a nice quiet car to drive
Plenty of boot space and very good value for the price paid.
Very smooth. A bit higher than most cars so feel safer and see more.
Spacious in the cab and boot space is more than adequate. Love the glass pano roof and electric blind, makes the car feel bigger and brighter. The half leather seats look really classy and lift the interior, electronic hand brake is a nice touch. Good all round vision and a comfortable drive, a good little brother to the Zafira.
Nice family car but still compact and stylish.
