Volkswagen Amarok Mk2 Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Posher inside than a Ford Ranger	More expensive to buy than a Ford Ranger
Almost SUV-like driving dynamics	Still feels very large to drive and park
Five-year warranty and servicing package	No separate panel for heater controls

Quick Summary

The Volkswagen Amarok Mk2 is a practical pickup truck that combines commercial capability with SUV-like refinement. Developed jointly with Ford, this second-generation model is 96mm longer than its predecessor with an extended wheelbase providing more crew cab space. It offers impressive towing capacity of up to 3,500kg (automatic) and payload of 1,113kg, making it a genuine workhorse. The interior is notably more upmarket than rivals, featuring intuitive infotainment systems and quality materials throughout. Available in double-cab configuration only, it comes with a choice of two 2.0-litre diesel engines or a 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel.

The Amarok delivers refined driving dynamics for a pickup, with light steering, excellent visibility, and predictable handling that makes it manageable on UK roads despite its size. Real-world fuel economy sits around 27-28mpg in mixed driving, whilst the five-year warranty and servicing package provide excellent peace of mind. Trim levels range from Life through to range-topping Aventura, with progressive additions of luxury features and technology. As a commercial vehicle, it qualifies for flat-rate Benefit-in-Kind company car tax, making it surprisingly affordable for business use. However, it is typically more expensive than the closely related Ford Ranger.

Best for: Commercial users seeking a capable pickup with premium interior quality, buyers wanting SUV-like refinement in a workhorse vehicle, and those valuing the comprehensive warranty and servicing package.

Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers comparing it directly to the Ford Ranger, those prioritising fuel economy, or drivers uncomfortable with its substantial size and parking requirements.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Amarok if: You're a commercial user seeking a capable pickup with premium interior quality, want SUV-like refinement in a workhorse vehicle, or value the comprehensive five-year warranty and servicing package.

Consider alternatives if: You're budget-conscious and comparing directly to the Ford Ranger, prioritise fuel economy, or are uncomfortable with its substantial size and parking requirements.

Competitive Position: The Volkswagen Amarok Mk2 is a strong contender in the premium pickup segment, offering superior interior quality and refinement compared to rivals like the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux. Whilst it commands a higher price than the closely related Ranger, the comprehensive warranty and servicing package, combined with its SUV-like driving dynamics and well-appointed cabin, justify the premium for buyers seeking a more luxurious pickup experience. The Isuzu D-Max and Toyota Hilux remain formidable competitors, but the Amarok's refined approach makes it the choice for those prioritising comfort alongside capability.
