Volkswagen Amarok (2023-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Even posher inside than a Ford Ranger | More expensive to buy than a Ford Ranger |
| Almost SUV-like driving dynamics | Still feels very large to drive and park |
| Five-year warranty and servicing package | No separate panel for heater controls |
Quick Summary
The Volkswagen Amarok (2023-present) is a robust pickup truck developed in partnership with the Ford Ranger, available exclusively in a double-cab configuration. It boasts increased length and wheelbase over its predecessor, enhancing crew cab space. Designed for commercial demands, it offers excellent towing capacity of up to 3,500kg and a payload of up to 1,113kg, complemented by standard 4Motion four-wheel-drive and impressive off-road capabilities.
Despite its workhorse credentials, the Amarok features an SUV-like interior with generous passenger space, making it suitable for families. It provides a refined driving experience for a pickup, with light steering and good visibility, though its size is still noticeable. While fuel economy is typical for a large diesel, its eligibility for a flat rate of company car tax and a comprehensive 5+ Promise package (servicing, MOTs, warranty, roadside assistance) adds significant value, making it a compelling option in its segment.
Best for: Those needing a robust commercial vehicle, families seeking a spacious and practical alternative to a large SUV, buyers looking for excellent towing/payload capacity, or those benefiting from commercial vehicle tax breaks and warranty packages.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising compact size for urban driving/parking, those seeking ultimate fuel efficiency, or those who prefer physical buttons for essential controls like heating.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise compact size for urban driving/parking, ultimate fuel efficiency, or prefer physical buttons for essential controls.
Competitive Position: The Volkswagen Amarok (2023-present) stands out in the pickup market for its well-appointed, SUV-like interior and refined driving dynamics, offering a premium feel compared to rivals. While sharing its platform with the Ford Ranger, it aims for a more upmarket position, evidenced by its slightly higher price. Its strong practicality, performance, ruggedness, and comprehensive 5-year servicing and warranty package make it a compelling choice for both commercial users and those seeking a versatile family vehicle, despite its size and touchscreen-integrated controls.
