Volkswagen Amarok (2010-2020) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Hefty payload and a big loadbed	Huge size can be intimidating to drive around town
Enjoyable to drive, especially the V6 models	Tends to cost more on the used market than most rivals
Classy cabin	A Toyota Hilux has the edge for reliability

Quick Summary

The Volkswagen Amarok (2010-2020) revolutionised the pick-up truck market by combining rugged practicality with premium refinement. Classed as a commercial vehicle but featuring a spacious double-cab layout seating five, the Amarok offers an upmarket interior and car-like driving experience rarely found in its segment. Early models featured 2.0-litre TDI engines with 138bhp or 178bhp, whilst the 2016 facelift introduced a game-changing 3.0-litre V6 diesel with 221bhp, later increased to 254bhp, delivering impressive performance and 406lb ft of torque. The V6 transformed the Amarok into a genuinely quick machine, capable of 0-62mph in 7.4 seconds, whilst maintaining respectable fuel economy of 25.9-28.2mpg in real-world driving.

Practicality is exceptional, with a vast 2.52 square metre loadbed accommodating a euro pallet and a maximum payload of 1,154kg. The cabin boasts abundant storage, comfortable seating for five with commanding visibility, and a well-finished interior that outclasses most rivals. Standard four-wheel drive (selectable on most models) ensures strong traction, whilst the automatic gearbox makes urban driving manageable despite the vehicle's five-metre length. Running costs are reasonable for a vehicle of this size, with fixed-price VW servicing available. However, the Amarok commands premium pricing on the used market and lacks the legendary reliability of the Toyota Hilux.

Best for: Buyers seeking a premium pick-up combining work capability with driving enjoyment, those needing substantial payload and loadbed capacity, and those who value refinement and comfort in a commercial vehicle.

Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers prioritising value over premium appeal, those seeking maximum reliability, or drivers uncomfortable with the vehicle's considerable size in urban environments.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Amarok if: You seek a premium pick-up combining work capability with driving enjoyment, need substantial payload and loadbed capacity, and value refinement and comfort in a commercial vehicle.

Consider alternatives if: You are budget-conscious and prioritise value over premium appeal, seeking maximum reliability, or uncomfortable with the vehicle's considerable size in urban environments.

Competitive Position: The Volkswagen Amarok (2010-2020) stands as the most refined and enjoyable pick-up to drive, particularly in V6 form. Whilst it commands premium pricing on the used market and lacks the legendary reliability of the Toyota Hilux, it outclasses most rivals for cabin quality and driving dynamics. The Ford Ranger matches it for driving pleasure and offers better user ratings, whilst the Nissan Navara provides comparable value. However, if you want a pick-up that's genuinely enjoyable to drive whilst remaining tough and practical, the Amarok remains an excellent choice for those who can afford its premium positioning.
