Volkswagen Amarok (2023-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Even posher inside than a Ford Ranger | More expensive to buy than a Ford Ranger |
| Almost SUV-like driving dynamics | Still feels very large to drive and park |
| Five-year warranty and servicing package | No separate panel for heater controls |
Quick Summary
The Volkswagen Amarok (2023-present) is a robust pickup truck, sharing its platform with the Ford Ranger, designed to compete in a market with rivals like the Toyota Hilux and Isuzu D-Max. This second-generation model is longer and has an extended wheelbase, offering more interior space, especially in its double-cab configuration. It boasts impressive commercial capabilities, including a towing capacity of up to 3,500kg, a payload of up to 1,113kg, and a wading depth of 800mm, making it a strong workhorse.
Despite its size, the Amarok offers an almost SUV-like driving experience with light steering and good visibility, making it surprisingly refined for a pickup. Engine options include two 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesels and a 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel, all with 4Motion four-wheel-drive as standard. The interior features a modern infotainment system (10.1 or 12 inches) with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and digital dials, though heater controls are integrated into the touchscreen. Running costs include official fuel economy figures around 28-33mpg, and it benefits from a flat rate of company car tax if the payload exceeds one tonne. VW also offers a 5+ Promise, including five services, three MOTs, a five-year warranty, and roadside assistance.
Best for: Drivers needing a capable workhorse pickup with excellent towing and payload, those seeking an SUV-like interior experience in a commercial vehicle, and buyers looking for a robust pickup with a comprehensive warranty and servicing package.
Not ideal for: Buyers on a strict budget (as it's more expensive than its Ford Ranger sibling), those who frequently need to park in tight spaces due to its vast size, or users who prefer physical buttons for essential controls like heating.

The Verdict
You should buy the Amarok if: You need a capable workhorse pickup with excellent towing and payload, desire an SUV-like interior experience in a commercial vehicle, or are looking for a robust pickup with a comprehensive warranty and servicing package.
Consider alternatives if: You are on a strict budget (as it's more expensive than the Ford Ranger), frequently need to park in tight spaces, or prefer physical buttons for essential controls like heating.
Competitive Position: The Volkswagen Amarok (2023-present) stands out in the pickup market with its premium, SUV-like interior and refined driving dynamics, which are a significant step up for a commercial vehicle. While it shares its underpinnings with the Ford Ranger and comes at a higher price point, its robust commercial capabilities, impressive towing and payload, and a comprehensive 5-year warranty and servicing package make it a compelling choice. It successfully combines rugged utility with comfort, positioning it as a strong contender for those who need a capable work vehicle that doesn't compromise on interior quality or driving pleasure.
