Volkswagen Beetle (2011-2019) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Cheerful retro style | Very cramped in the back |
| Fuel-efficient diesel engines | Much smaller boot than the Golf on which it's based |
| Choice of hatchback and convertible models | The turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol is fast but a bit incongruous |
Quick Summary
The Volkswagen Beetle (2011-2019), also known as the A5, successfully reinterpreted the classic Beetle aesthetic, built upon the reliable Golf platform. Available as both a conventional hatchback and a cabriolet, it prioritised distinctive retro styling and charm. While it necessitated compromises, such as being a three-door (or two-door for the convertible) and having a less accessible boot, these were often outweighed by its unique appeal for buyers seeking character over strict practicality.
Produced for nearly eight years until 2019, this generation received subtle updates to its visuals, engines, and infotainment. Its Golf-derived underpinnings ensure a composed and capable driving experience, albeit not as dynamic as some rivals. Despite cramped rear seats and average visibility, it offers ample front space and good storage. The Beetle ultimately provides a cheerful, characterful drive, making it a compelling choice for those prioritising unique style and personality.
Best for: Drivers who prioritise cheerful retro style and character, appreciate a comfortable and composed drive, or are looking for a car that makes them smile.
Not ideal for: Buyers needing significant rear passenger space, easy rear access, a large and easily accessible boot, or those seeking an exciting, dynamic driving experience.

The Verdict
You should buy the Beetle if: You prioritise cheerful retro style and character, appreciate a comfortable and composed drive, or are looking for a car that makes you smile.
Consider alternatives if: You need generous rear passenger space, easy rear access, a large and easily accessible boot, or seek a highly dynamic and exciting driving experience.
Competitive Position: The Volkswagen Beetle (2011-2019) stands out in the supermini segment for its unique retro charm and character, offering a comfortable and composed driving experience derived from its Golf underpinnings. While it makes compromises in rear practicality and boot access compared to some rivals, its distinctive styling and cheerful nature appeal to buyers prioritising personality over outright utility. It competes well against other retro-styled cars like the MINI and Fiat 500 by offering a more relaxed drive and potentially better front-seat space.

4.4 Overall rating
(13 reviews)Having looked at many vw beetles. This particular car is exceptional in many ways, having only traveled 47,000 miles in its 16 year life and has complimentary bodywork. No other car ( perhaps Fiat) could compare to a Beetle.
Lovely looking car. Drives nice. Very comfortable. Missing Bluetooth.
The car at quick glance looks lovely but it’s still showing signs of the previous accident
Value for money. Good friendly service. No hard sell.
It is good value and I would recommend to people
