Volkswagen Golf Mk7 (2013-2019) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Possibly the most upmarket Golf interior yet	Reliability niggles plague the car, especially DSG-equipped models
Fast, comfortable and economical	Entry-level models a bit basic
GTI and R performance versions are true icons	Boot space is useful rather than exceptional

Quick Summary

The Volkswagen Golf Mk7 (2013-2019) is arguably peak Golf, embodying the evergreen model's broad appeal with handsome lines, a premium interior combining space and quality, and polished driving dynamics. Launched in 2013 and refreshed in 2017, this seventh-generation model offers a comprehensive range of modern, technically advanced turbo petrol and diesel engines, plus plug-in hybrid (GTE) and fully electric (e-Golf) options. The line-up includes warm and hot hatch variants: the diesel GTD, petrol GTI, all-wheel drive R, and the versatile Alltrack. Even in sporty guise, the Golf prioritises all-round accomplishment over thrills, making it extremely easy to live with whilst exuding quality that helps maintain strong residual values.

Practicality is excellent across the range, with a logically laid-out dashboard, outstanding driving position, and ample storage. Boot space ranges from 380 litres (hatchback) to 605 litres (estate), stretching to 1,270 and 1,620 litres respectively with rear seats folded. Driving dynamics combine accurate handling, strong refinement, and excellent comfort, with engines ranging from frugal 1.0-litre petrols to the fire-breathing GTI and R hot hatches. Running costs are competitive, with most models achieving around 55mpg in real-world driving, whilst the GTE hybrid claims 156.9mpg and the e-Golf offers up to 118 miles per charge. However, reliability issues have dogged this generation, making a full service history and verification of recall work essential before purchase.

Best for: Buyers seeking an upmarket, comfortable, and economical family hatchback with excellent driving dynamics, those wanting hot hatch performance (GTI/R), and drivers prioritising refinement and quality feel.

Not ideal for: Those concerned about reliability without comprehensive service history verification, buyers seeking maximum boot space, or those wanting the lowest purchase price in the family hatchback segment.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Golf if: You're seeking an upmarket, comfortable, and economical family hatchback with excellent driving dynamics, want hot hatch performance (GTI/R), or prioritise refinement and quality feel.

Consider alternatives if: You're concerned about reliability without comprehensive service history verification, need maximum boot space, or want the lowest purchase price in the family hatchback segment.

Competitive Position: The Volkswagen Golf Mk7 (2013-2019) is often referred to as the best hatchback available, even when compared to premium rivals like the Audi A3, Mercedes-Benz A-Class, and BMW 1 Series. It combines agility and composure with fine comfort, offering a mighty fine driving experience that's relaxed, economical, and faster than expected. Whilst reliability issues have dogged this generation, a full service history and verification of recall work ensure you'll have one of the best all-round family hatchbacks of all time. The Golf's upmarket interior, comprehensive engine range, and iconic GTI and R variants give it a clear edge over the Vauxhall Astra, whilst it remains competitive with the Ford Focus and Seat Leon in terms of overall appeal and value.
