Volkswagen Golf Mk8 (2020-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Desirable image | Fiddly infotainment system |
| Great to drive | Rivals offer more interior space |
| Comfortable ride | Not significantly better than a Mk7 Golf |
Quick Summary
The Volkswagen Golf Mk8 is one of Britain's most popular family cars, offering a clean, minimalist cabin with a pair of 10-inch digital displays as standard. Available as a five-door hatchback or estate, it provides comfortable seating for four adults with good headroom and legroom. The estate model offers enhanced practicality with a 611-litre boot, whilst the hatchback provides 381 litres. Build quality remains good, though rivals have closed the gap. The Golf Mk8 delivers a refined driving experience with a range of efficient engines, including three petrols and two diesels, alongside high-performance GTI and R variants, plus a plug-in hybrid GTE option.
The Mk8 Golf maintains the excellent handling and ride comfort of its predecessor, blending crisp performance with refinement and good body control. Fuel economy is impressive across the range, with the 1.5 TSI petrol returning over 50mpg and diesels achieving nearly 70mpg in official figures. Running costs are reasonable, with fixed-price servicing available from VW. However, the Mk8 offers little advancement over the Mk7 in terms of space, efficiency, or driving dynamics, and rivals such as the Ford Focus, Honda Civic, and BMW 1 Series have made substantial improvements, narrowing the Golf's traditional class leadership.
Best for: Buyers seeking a desirable, well-engineered family hatchback with a premium badge, excellent driving dynamics, and a comfortable ride, plus those wanting a spacious estate option. Not ideal for: Those prioritising maximum interior space, intuitive infotainment controls, or significant innovation over the previous generation.

The Verdict
You should buy the Golf if: You're seeking a desirable, well-engineered family hatchback with excellent driving dynamics, a comfortable ride, and a premium badge, or you want a spacious estate option. Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum interior space, intuitive infotainment controls, or significant innovation over the previous generation. Competitive Position: The Volkswagen Golf Mk8 remains one of the best family hatchbacks available, combining desirable styling, refined driving dynamics, and a comfortable ride. However, rivals have substantially closed the gap. The Ford Focus matches it on value and user ratings, whilst the Honda Civic and BMW 1 Series offer compelling alternatives with their own strengths. The Golf's premium badge appeal and excellent handling remain key advantages, but it no longer enjoys the clear class leadership it once held. For buyers valuing brand prestige and driving refinement, the Golf is an excellent choice; those prioritising space or innovation may find competitors more appealing. What people say
Good value car with great features would definitely recommend
Great little cars quite fast and very good for a little run about or a little bit of fun and they do accelerate quite quick so overall really recommend them
Id compare it to a Volkswagen Passat. This was the right card for me and Im really delighted with it.
Great car, for a diesel it should come with a Pilots License. So fast & nippy, great economy and refinement overall.
Test drove the Golf R in stock specification and was really impressed with how much the interior and drive has been improved since the last model. The car has retained its USP of driveable power whilst being versatile for commute/family life. Apart from performance I was most impressed with how well the car drives normally in Comfort mode and how nice the seats are you could easily do a long commute each day in this which is more than I can as for my old TT quattro. I have ordered a Golf R in Lapiz Blue with Performance Pack as I think it gives the car a more sporty look. The ride was comfortable enough for me without the Dynamic Chassis Control option and the exhaust made more than enough pops and bangs without the pricey Acrapovic option. My only niggle is the rear camera wasnt standard seems a bit mean these days but all the R rivals are similar.
