Volkswagen ID.4 (2021-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Good battery range	Frustrating infotainment and controls
Roomy interior	Expensive to buy
Comfortable to drive	A Tesla Model Y is more fun to drive

Quick Summary

The Volkswagen ID.4 (2021-present) is a seriously appealing family electric SUV that combines composed, unflappable driving with practical, high-tech interior design. Powered by a 77kWh lithium-ion battery and 201bhp rear-mounted electric motor, it delivers 310 to 323 miles of official range. The spacious 543-litre boot, limo-like rear legroom, and flat floor make it exceptionally practical for families, whilst the classy cabin materials and intuitive steering create a luxurious driving experience. The cushy suspension and light steering weight prioritise comfort over excitement, making it ideal for relaxed motorway cruising and town driving alike.

Real-world efficiency sits around 230 miles in mixed driving, dropping below 200 miles in winter motorway conditions, though summer suburban driving can exceed 300 miles. Charging from a 7kW home wallbox takes under 13 hours, whilst rapid charging peaks at 125kW for a 100-mile top-up in approximately 20 minutes. Running costs are competitive, with a full charge costing under £11 on standard domestic electricity tariffs. The main frustrations are the touchscreen-integrated climate controls and touch-sensitive steering wheel buttons that are prone to accidental activation, plus the infotainment system's occasionally sluggish responsiveness.

Best for: Families seeking a spacious, comfortable, and technologically advanced electric SUV with excellent range and practical interior design; those prioritising relaxed, composed driving over performance.

Not ideal for: Buyers wanting engaging, enthusiastic driving dynamics; those seeking the lowest-cost electric SUV option; or drivers who prefer traditional physical controls over touchscreen integration.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the ID.4 if: You're seeking a spacious, comfortable, and technologically advanced electric SUV with excellent range and practical interior design, or prioritising relaxed, composed driving over performance.

Consider alternatives if: You want engaging, enthusiastic driving dynamics, the lowest-cost electric SUV option, or prefer traditional physical controls over touchscreen integration.

Competitive Position: The Volkswagen ID.4 is a polished and composed family electric SUV that competes well in the premium EV market. Whilst the Skoda Enyaq iV offers similar specifications for less money and the Ford Mustang Mach-E delivers more engaging driving dynamics, the ID.4's superior interior quality, spaciousness, and refined comfort make it an excellent choice for families prioritising relaxation and practicality. The petrol-powered Volkswagen Tiguan remains a strong alternative for those not yet ready to embrace electric motoring, offering comparable space and versatility with proven reliability.
