Volkswagen ID.4 (2021-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Good battery range | Frustrating infotainment and controls |
| Roomy interior | Expensive to buy |
| Comfortable to drive | A Tesla Model Y is more fun to drive |
Quick Summary
The Volkswagen ID.4 (2021-present) is an all-electric SUV, designed as an electric-era equivalent to the Tiguan and built on the MEB platform. It offers impressive practicality with a large 543-litre boot and generous rear legroom, making it well-suited for families, though its 60/40 split rear seats don't fold completely flat and there's no frunk storage. The driving experience is notably composed, serene, and comfort-oriented, with minimal cabin noise, soft suspension, and intuitive steering, prioritising relaxation over sporty excitement.
Equipped with a 77kWh battery and a 201bhp electric motor, the ID.4 boasts an official range of 310-323 miles. While real-world efficiency can vary, especially in colder conditions, its running costs are significantly lower than petrol or diesel alternatives, with a full home charge costing under £11. Inside, the cabin features classy materials and a comfortable driving position, but the infotainment system and touch-sensitive controls can prove frustrating due to their lack of responsiveness and intuitive design.
Best for: Families needing a spacious and practical electric SUV, drivers prioritising comfort and a serene driving experience, and those looking for lower running costs compared to ICE vehicles.
Not ideal for: Buyers seeking thrilling driving dynamics, those who prefer physical buttons and a more intuitive infotainment system, or those expecting class-leading real-world range in all conditions.

The Verdict
You should buy the ID.4 if: You're a family needing a spacious, practical, and comfortable electric SUV, or a driver prioritising a serene and composed driving experience with lower running costs.
Consider alternatives if: You desire thrilling driving dynamics, prefer physical controls over touch-sensitive ones, or need class-leading real-world range in all conditions.
Competitive Position: The Volkswagen ID.4 is a strong contender in the electric SUV market, offering impressive practicality, comfort, and a polished driving experience. While it faces stiff competition from the more affordable Skoda Enyaq iV and the more engaging Ford Mustang Mach-E, its refined nature and family-friendly attributes make it a compelling choice for those seeking a well-rounded electric vehicle. Its main drawbacks are its sometimes frustrating infotainment system and touch controls.

4 Overall rating
(1 reviews)Great to drive and good visibility. I would have bought it if it was just a bit cheaper. Like most electric vehicles, it is a bit over-priced but not as much as some (apparently the new electric Nissan Ariya is comparing itself to Audis and BMWs to justify its price). The ID4 is comfortable (but interior colours are awful) Kids can see out unlike some other cars that have come onto the market recently (Kia Sportage - what a mistake - kids cant see out thanks to the sloped rear passenger windows).
