Volkswagen ID.4 (2021-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Good battery range | Frustrating infotainment and controls |
| Roomy interior | Expensive to buy |
| Comfortable to drive | A Tesla Model Y is more fun to drive |
Quick Summary
The Volkswagen ID.4 (2021-present) is a seriously appealing family electric SUV that combines composed, unflappable driving with practical, high-tech interior design. With a 543-litre boot, limo-like rear legroom, and a flat floor, it offers excellent space for families. The 77kWh battery delivers 310 to 323 miles of official range, though real-world efficiency varies with conditions. It's easy to manoeuvre around town despite its size, yet stable and relaxing at motorway speeds, making it an ideal family vehicle for those seeking electric motoring without compromise.
The ID.4 is composed and classy, with quality materials throughout the cabin and intuitive steering. However, the infotainment system can be frustrating, with touch-sensitive controls too easily activated by accident, and the climate control integrated into the touchscreen. Running costs are competitive, with a full charge costing under £11 from a home charger. Rapid charging peaks at 125kW, delivering 100 miles in around 20 minutes. The Skoda Enyaq iV remains the main rival, offering similar prospects for less money, whilst the Ford Mustang Mach-E provides a more engaging driving experience.
Best for: Families seeking a spacious, comfortable electric SUV with good range, those prioritising practicality and refinement, and buyers wanting a composed, relaxing driving experience.
Not ideal for: Those wanting the most engaging driving dynamics, budget-conscious buyers seeking the cheapest electric SUV option, or drivers frustrated by touchscreen-heavy infotainment systems.

The Verdict
You should buy the ID.4 if: You're seeking a spacious, comfortable electric SUV with good range, prioritising practicality and refinement, or wanting a composed, relaxing driving experience.
Consider alternatives if: You want the most engaging driving dynamics, are budget-conscious and seeking the cheapest electric SUV, or are frustrated by touchscreen-heavy infotainment systems.
Competitive Position: The Volkswagen ID.4 (2021-present) is a strong contender in the premium electric SUV market, offering excellent space, comfort, and refinement. Whilst the Skoda Enyaq iV provides similar prospects for less money and the Ford Mustang Mach-E delivers more engaging driving dynamics, the ID.4's polish, poise, and practical design make it an impressive choice. The petrol-powered Volkswagen Tiguan remains a strong alternative for those not yet ready to embrace electric motoring. The ID.4's quality interior, good battery range, and relaxing driving experience justify its premium positioning for families prioritising comfort and practicality.

4 Overall rating
(1 reviews)Great to drive and good visibility. I would have bought it if it was just a bit cheaper. Like most electric vehicles, it is a bit over-priced but not as much as some (apparently the new electric Nissan Ariya is comparing itself to Audis and BMWs to justify its price). The ID4 is comfortable (but interior colours are awful) Kids can see out unlike some other cars that have come onto the market recently (Kia Sportage - what a mistake - kids cant see out thanks to the sloped rear passenger windows).
