Volkswagen ID.5 (2026) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Comfortable to drive	Certainly not cheap
Decent interior quality	Lags behind key rivals in several areas
Range and charging speeds are competitive	Styling arguably doesn't hit the mark

Quick Summary

The Volkswagen ID.5 is a sleek, coupe-SUV version of the ID.4, offering a more stylish alternative to the conventional electric family SUV. With a raked-back roofline and a practical hatchback boot, it combines sporty aesthetics with genuine usability. The ID.5 provides excellent rear headroom despite its sweeping roofline, a spacious 549-litre boot with underfloor storage, and a bright, airy cabin thanks to the standard panoramic sunroof. It's available with multiple battery sizes and trim levels, with official WLTP driving range figures reaching up to 345 miles depending on specification.

The ID.5 majors on comfort rather than excitement, with smooth, quiet powertrains and light steering that make it ideal for towns and cities. Rear-wheel-drive versions produce 167bhp or 282bhp, whilst the flagship GTX Edition adds four-wheel drive and 335bhp. Ride comfort is exceptional, absorbing bumps well and settling into a relaxed cruise on longer journeys. However, the ID.5 doesn't offer exceptional value compared to rivals like the Tesla Model Y, Kia EV6, or Audi Q4 E-Tron, and it prioritises comfort over engaging driving dynamics. Running costs are competitive with other electric vehicles, though public charging is more expensive than home charging.

Best for: Buyers seeking a comfortable, well-equipped electric family SUV with a stylish coupe design, excellent practicality, and long-distance capability.

Not ideal for: Those prioritising value for money, engaging driving dynamics, or unique features that set it apart from competitors.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the ID.5 if: You're seeking a comfortable, well-equipped electric family SUV with a stylish coupe design, excellent practicality, and strong long-distance capability.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise value for money, engaging driving dynamics, or distinctive features that differentiate it from competitors.

Competitive Position: The Volkswagen ID.5 is a pleasant and likeable electric SUV that delivers comfort, decent practicality, and competitive range. However, it struggles to justify its premium pricing in a crowded market. The Skoda Enyaq offers superior value and a higher overall rating, the Tesla Model Y provides greater practicality and easier long-journey charging, the Kia EV6 is cheaper and more engaging to drive, and the Audi Q4 E-Tron is essentially the same car with a more desirable badge. Whilst there's nothing drastically wrong with the ID.5, it lacks a unique selling point and doesn't do anything exceptional, leaving it lagging behind the best in this increasingly competitive class.
