You know where you stand with the Volkswagen Passat. From generation to generation, it's not the most exciting family car to drive or look at. But it's always competent, thoroughly sensible, and has few obvious weaknesses. This version of the Passat, known as the B7, sold from 2010 to 2014 and is a good example. It's an evolution of the previous Passat B6, and underneath Volkswagen's understated styling a number of improvements to safety and in-car tech had been made.
