Volkswagen Polo (2018-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
High quality interior	Not a cheap option
Impressive practicality	A Ford Fiesta is more fun
Sophisticated driving experience	GTI version isn't very exciting to drive

Quick Summary

The Volkswagen Polo (2018-present), the sixth-generation model, remains a benchmark in the supermini class. It offers a compliant suspension and exceptional rolling refinement, making it one of the most civilised cars of its type on the road. With punchy engines and well-weighted controls, it's easy to drive and capable in corners. The interior is particularly impressive, dripping with quality and posh design that's an ergonomic masterclass. Practicality is top-drawer, with space for four tall adults and a 350-litre boot, one of the largest in the class.

Running costs are generally palatable once the initial purchase outlay is covered. The 1.6 TDI diesel achieves up to 57mpg, whilst the 1.0-litre petrols beat 50mpg with the five-speed manual. The 1.0 TSI 95 achieves 46mpg with the DSG automatic, and the 1.0 TSI 115 delivers up to 46mpg with the manual or 48mpg with the DSG. Vehicle Excise Duty is a flat £150 per year for all variants. Whilst the Polo is a pricier option in the supermini class, it feels worth every penny, offering premium badge appeal, quality, and practicality that rivals struggle to match.

Best for: Buyers seeking premium badge appeal, high quality and refinement, impressive practicality, and a sophisticated driving experience in a supermini.

Not ideal for: Those prioritising driving fun (Ford Fiesta is more engaging), budget-conscious buyers seeking the cheapest supermini option, or those wanting an exciting GTI variant.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Polo if: You're seeking premium badge appeal, high quality and refinement, impressive practicality, and a sophisticated driving experience in a supermini.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise driving fun (Ford Fiesta is more engaging), are budget-conscious seeking the cheapest supermini option, or want an exciting GTI variant.

Competitive Position: The Volkswagen Polo (2018-present) is a strong contender in the supermini market, offering premium quality, refinement, and practicality that rivals struggle to match. Whilst the Ford Fiesta provides more driving engagement and the Seat Ibiza offers stylish appeal, the Polo's sophisticated interior, compliant suspension, and exceptional build quality justify its higher price point. It's the ideal choice for buyers willing to pay a premium for a more upmarket supermini experience, combining practicality with prestige and refinement.
