Volkswagen Sharan (2010-2022) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Massively practical seven seater | Not at all trendy |
| Sliding rear doors for easy access | Models on sports suspension have a firmer ride |
| Huge boot | Reliability can be an issue in older models |
Quick Summary
The Volkswagen Sharan (2010-2022) is a highly practical and sensible seven-seater MPV, significantly larger and roomier than its predecessor. It features an ingenious folding seat system, replacing the removable seats of the first generation, which was lauded by car reviews for its flexibility. Offering a generous 300 litres of boot space even with all seven seats in use (more than many rivals), and cavernous storage when seats are folded, it excels in accommodating families and luggage. Sliding rear doors further enhance accessibility.
While not designed for driving enthusiasts, the Sharan offers a capable and comfortable ride. Engine options included 1.4 and 2.0 TSI petrols, and 2.0 TDI diesels, with a 2015 facelift bringing cleaner, more efficient units and improved infotainment with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility. Running costs are generally lower than equivalent SUVs, with diesel models achieving mid-40s to low-60s mpg. Discontinued in 2022 due to the rise of SUVs, the Sharan remains a keenly priced and solid used buy, offering excellent value for those prioritising space and practicality over trendy styling.
Best for: Families needing maximum practicality and space, budget-conscious buyers seeking an affordable seven-seater, and those who value sensible design over trendy styling.
Not ideal for: Driving enthusiasts, buyers prioritising badge appeal or cutting-edge design, or those concerned about potential reliability issues with older models.

The Verdict
You should buy the Sharan if: You're on a budget, seeking a highly practical family car with loads of space, flexible seating, sliding doors, and lower running costs than an SUV.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise driving dynamics (like a Ford S-Max), trendy styling, or are concerned about potential reliability issues with older models.
Competitive Position: The Volkswagen Sharan (2010-2022) excels as a practical and sensible family MPV in the used market. While it may not offer the driving verve of some rivals or the trendy appeal of SUVs, its ingenious interior, generous space, and flexible seating make it a standout choice for families. Its affordability and lower running costs, especially as a used vehicle, provide excellent value for those who prioritise functionality and practicality above all else.
