Volkswagen Sharan (2010-2022) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Massively practical seven seater | Not at all trendy |
| Sliding rear doors for easy access | Models on sports suspension have a firmer ride |
| Huge boot | Reliability can be an issue in older models |
Quick Summary
The Volkswagen Sharan (2010-2022) is a sensible, practical seven-seater MPV designed for families prioritising space and versatility. The second-generation model, launched in 2010, represented a significant step forward with increased dimensions providing considerably more interior room than its predecessor. The innovative EasyFold seating system allows the second and third rows to fold into the floor, whilst sliding rear doors enhance accessibility. With 300 litres of boot space even with all seven seats upright, the Sharan offers more luggage capacity than most rivals, and the flexible seating arrangements provide seemingly endless permutations for passengers and cargo.
Engine options include 1.4 and 2.0 TSI petrols alongside 2.0 TDI diesels, with outputs ranging from 113bhp to 197bhp. The 2015 facelift brought improved infotainment systems, enhanced safety features including Automatic Post-Collision Braking, and Bluetooth connectivity across the range. Diesel engines deliver superior fuel economy, achieving 40-43mpg in real-world driving, whilst petrol variants manage mid-30s mpg. Vehicle Excise Duty is competitive at £125-£150 annually, and insurance groups start from 14. As a used buy, the Sharan represents excellent value, particularly when compared to fashionable SUVs, though some owners report reliability concerns in older examples.
Best for: Families needing maximum practicality and space, those transporting seven passengers regularly, and budget-conscious buyers seeking an alternative to expensive SUVs.
Not ideal for: Driving enthusiasts seeking engaging handling, buyers prioritising trendy styling, or those concerned about potential reliability issues in pre-facelift models.

The Verdict
You should buy the Sharan if: You need maximum practicality and space for a large family, regularly transport seven passengers, or seek an affordable alternative to trendy SUVs.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise engaging driving dynamics, modern styling, or require absolute reliability assurance in older models.
Competitive Position: The Volkswagen Sharan (2010-2022) is a strong contender in the seven-seater MPV market, offering exceptional practicality, innovative seating flexibility, and excellent value as a used purchase. Whilst the Seat Alhambra and Ford Galaxy may offer slightly more engaging driving experiences, and the Citroën Grand C4 Picasso provides marginally better value deals, the Sharan excels in interior space and accessibility. Its sliding doors, EasyFold seating system, and generous boot capacity make it an outstanding choice for families prioritising practicality over fashion. With competitive running costs and keenly priced used examples, the Sharan remains a highly sensible seven-seater option, particularly for budget-conscious buyers willing to overlook its unfashionable styling.
