Volkswagen Touran (2015-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Fantastically roomy interior | A Ford S-Max is more rewarding to drive |
| Plenty of seating flexibility | Dash layout starting to feel old |
| More car-like to drive than you might expect | Reliability issues on some models |
Quick Summary
The Volkswagen Touran (2015-present) is a highly practical and well-built compact MPV that prioritises space and versatility above all else. Despite being only slightly larger than a Golf, it cleverly packages a seven-seat layout into its modest footprint, making it an ideal choice for families. All UK models feature a third row of seats that fold flat into the boot floor, though this space is best reserved for children. With the third row folded, boot space is a cavernous 917 litres, expanding to a van-like 1,857 litres with the middle row also folded flat.
On the road, the Touran offers a comfortable and confident ride, feeling safe and easy to drive in all conditions, even if it lacks the dynamic flair of rivals like the Ford S-Max. A range of efficient petrol and diesel engines are available, with the 148bhp 1.4-litre TSI petrol and 2.0-litre TDI diesel being highlights for their balance of performance and economy. The interior is typical Volkswagen: logically laid out, built from high-quality materials, and equipped with a user-friendly touchscreen infotainment system. It’s a supremely sensible and capable family hauler.
Best for: Families needing a versatile and spacious seven-seater, drivers who value build quality and comfort, and those looking for a practical MPV that's easy to drive.
Not ideal for: Buyers seeking an exciting driving experience, those who need to transport seven adults regularly, or drivers who want a more stylish or modern interior design.

| Volkswagen Touran | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 32.2% | 4.3/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the Touran if: You need a fantastically practical and flexible seven-seat family car and prioritise build quality and comfort over outright style or driving thrills.
Consider alternatives if: You want a more engaging drive (like the Ford S-Max), need to carry seven adults regularly, or prefer a more stylish design.
Competitive Position: The Volkswagen Touran is a formidable contender in the compact MPV segment, executing its mission as a family-hauling tool with resounding success. While it may not offer the driving fun of a Ford S-Max or the stylistic flair of a Citroen, its combination of immense practicality, high-quality interior, and comfortable road manners makes it a very sensible and highly recommendable choice for families who need space and versatility.

4.9 Overall rating
(12 reviews)Really good versatile car. Plenty of room for the family and for days out. Lots of nice features.
A brilliant vehicle for those needing a proper family car without being limited to a hatch back like the golf (limited boot space) nor being forced to consider the much larger MPV like a Sharan with the large parking footprint. Touran is a quality piece of kit with reliability and economy from the 1.6 CR Diesel power plant. Accessibility is excellent all round, comfortable and commanding driver position also allied to good driving dynamics. Ideally fuel emissions could be lower to benefit from lower Road Tax as a recurring cost element to long term ownership.
Good all round family car. The7 seats have already been used and is arguably the best feature of the car. It is a 2009 car so if i had to complain it would be to have USB adaptors in the front and back.
It was a beautiful car but the back seats were a little compact for my liking only because we a used to the Ford galaxy. But overall very nice
Car is in good condition with low mileage. Good value for money. Only thing missing is a headed front screen.
