I absolutely love this car. It’s in great condition, drives beautifully and so far seems very economical especially on long distance journeys. I cannot fault it at all. It’s so robust, spacious but neat on the road as well. I am so pleased.

Really good versatile car. Plenty of room for the family and for days out. Lots of nice features.

A brilliant vehicle for those needing a proper family car without being limited to a hatch back like the golf (limited boot space) nor being forced to consider the much larger MPV like a Sharan with the large parking footprint. Touran is a quality piece of kit with reliability and economy from the 1.6 CR Diesel power plant. Accessibility is excellent all round, comfortable and commanding driver position also allied to good driving dynamics. Ideally fuel emissions could be lower to benefit from lower Road Tax as a recurring cost element to long term ownership.

Good all round family car. The7 seats have already been used and is arguably the best feature of the car. It is a 2009 car so if i had to complain it would be to have USB adaptors in the front and back.

Volkswagen Touran (2015-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Fantastically roomy interior | A Ford S-Max is more rewarding to drive |
| Plenty of seating flexibility | Dash layout starting to feel old |
| More car-like to drive than you might expect | Reliability issues on some models |
Quick Summary
The Volkswagen Touran (2015-present) is an excellent compact MPV that prioritises practicality and space over style. This second-generation model offers impressive interior room despite its relatively modest external dimensions, making it ideal for families needing flexible seating arrangements. All UK models feature seven seats, with a third row that folds away into the boot floor, though these are best suited for small children or occasional use. With all seats folded, the Touran transforms into a spacious cargo carrier with up to 1,857 litres of storage, whilst maintaining a car-like driving experience that's both comfortable and confident.
The Touran offers extensive engine choice across petrol and diesel options, with the 1.4-litre TSI petrol and 148bhp 2.0-litre TDI diesel representing the sweet spots for performance and efficiency. Running costs are reasonable, with diesel engines delivering superior fuel economy for longer journeys. The interior features solid Volkswagen build quality, an intuitive touchscreen infotainment system, and abundant storage solutions throughout the cabin. Service costs are competitive, particularly with VW's fixed-price servicing scheme for cars aged three to 15 years.
Best for: Families requiring spacious, flexible seating and storage, those prioritising practicality over driving dynamics, and buyers seeking a sensible, well-equipped people carrier with car-like handling.
Not ideal for: Drivers seeking engaging, fun driving dynamics (the Ford S-Max is more rewarding), those wanting contemporary interior styling, or buyers concerned about potential reliability issues on certain models.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Volkswagen Touran | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 33.5% | 4.3/5 |
| Ford S-Max | 4/5 | 4.0/5 | 36.1% | 4.3/5 |
| Citroen Grand C4 Spacetourer | 4/5 | 4.9/5 | 45.0% | 4.3/5 |
| Renault Grand Scenic | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 27.6% | 4.2/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Touran if: You need a spacious, flexible family MPV with practical seating arrangements, prioritise comfort and versatility over driving excitement, and seek a sensible, well-equipped people carrier with car-like handling.
Consider alternatives if: You want engaging driving dynamics (Ford S-Max), prefer contemporary interior styling (Citroen Grand C4 Spacetourer), or are concerned about reliability issues on certain models.
Competitive Position: The Volkswagen Touran is a strong contender in the compact MPV market, offering exceptional interior space and seating flexibility at a competitive price point. Whilst the Ford S-Max delivers superior driving dynamics and the Citroen Grand C4 Spacetourer provides funky styling and better value deals, the Touran's combination of practicality, car-like handling, solid build quality, and extensive engine choice makes it an excellent choice for families prioritising space and versatility. Its reasonable running costs and fixed-price servicing options further enhance its appeal as a sensible, long-term family investment.
