I absolutely love this car. It’s in great condition, drives beautifully and so far seems very economical especially on long distance journeys. I cannot fault it at all. It’s so robust, spacious but neat on the road as well. I am so pleased.

A brilliant vehicle for those needing a proper family car without being limited to a hatch back like the golf (limited boot space) nor being forced to consider the much larger MPV like a Sharan with the large parking footprint. Touran is a quality piece of kit with reliability and economy from the 1.6 CR Diesel power plant. Accessibility is excellent all round, comfortable and commanding driver position also allied to good driving dynamics. Ideally fuel emissions could be lower to benefit from lower Road Tax as a recurring cost element to long term ownership.

Really good versatile car. Plenty of room for the family and for days out. Lots of nice features.

Good all round family car. The7 seats have already been used and is arguably the best feature of the car. It is a 2009 car so if i had to complain it would be to have USB adaptors in the front and back.

Volkswagen Touran (2015-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Fantastically roomy interior | A Ford S-Max is more rewarding to drive |
| Plenty of seating flexibility | Dash layout starting to feel old |
| More car-like to drive than you might expect | Reliability issues on some models |
Quick Summary
The Volkswagen Touran (2015-present) is an excellent compact MPV that prioritises practicality and space over style. All UK models feature seven seats, with the third row folding into the boot floor for occasional use. The interior is spacious for front and second-row passengers, whilst the boot expands from 137 litres with all seats up to 1,857 litres with the middle row folded flat. The cabin offers abundant storage with capacious door bins, large glovebox, and numerous cup holders and cubby holes—ideal for families with small children.
On the road, the Touran delivers a comfortable, supple ride with confident handling, though it prioritises comfort over driving excitement. A choice of petrol and diesel engines is available, with the 1.4-litre TSI petrol and 148bhp 2.0-litre TDI diesel representing the sweet spots. Diesel engines offer superior fuel economy, achieving up to 52.3mpg, whilst petrol variants reach 42.8mpg. The interior features typical Volkswagen quality with soft-touch plastics, leather trim, and an intuitive touchscreen infotainment system. Running costs are reasonable, with insurance groups between 9 and 21 of 50, and fixed-price servicing available at VW dealers.
Best for: Families needing spacious, flexible transport; those prioritising practicality and versatility; buyers seeking a sensible, well-equipped MPV with excellent interior space.
Not ideal for: Drivers seeking engaging, fun driving dynamics; those wanting cutting-edge interior design; buyers concerned about potential reliability issues on certain models.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Volkswagen Touran | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 34.9% | 4.3/5 |

| Ford S-Max | 4/5 | 4.0/5 | 46.2% | 4.3/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Touran if: You need spacious, flexible family transport; you prioritise practicality and versatility; you seek a sensible, well-equipped MPV with excellent interior space and reasonable running costs.
Consider alternatives if: You want engaging driving dynamics like the Ford S-Max, prefer funky styling like the Citroen Grand C4 Picasso, or are concerned about reliability issues on certain models.
Competitive Position: The Volkswagen Touran is an excellent compact MPV and should be high on the shortlist of anyone seeking spacious family transport. Whilst it may lack the driving fun of the Ford S-Max or the funky styling of the Citroen Grand C4 Picasso, the Touran excels as a utilitarian machine with a clear purpose. It drives well, offers a pleasant and roomy interior, and is well-equipped across the range with plenty of engine, gearbox, and trim choices. Its success in the market is well-deserved, making it a very sensible buy for families prioritising space and practicality.
