Volkswagen Touran (2015-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Fantastically roomy interior	A Ford S-Max is more rewarding to drive
Plenty of seating flexibility	Dash layout starting to feel old
More car-like to drive than you might expect	Reliability issues on some models

Quick Summary

The Volkswagen Touran (2015-present) is an excellent compact MPV that prioritises practicality and space over style. This second-generation model offers impressive interior room for a vehicle not much larger than a Golf hatchback, with all UK models featuring seven seats. The third row folds away into the boot floor for occasional use, whilst the flexible seating arrangement allows up to 1,857 litres of cargo space when seats are folded. Front and second-row passengers enjoy generous head and leg room, making it ideal for family transport without requiring a larger vehicle.

The Touran drives more car-like than expected, offering a comfortable, supple ride and confident handling, though it lacks the driving excitement of the Ford S-Max. Engine options include petrol units (1.0, 1.2, 1.4, and 1.5-litre TSI) and diesel engines (1.6 and 2.0-litre TDI), with the 1.4 TSI petrol and 148bhp 2.0-litre diesel representing the best value. Running costs are reasonable, with newer engines achieving up to 42.8mpg (petrol) and 52.3mpg (diesel). The interior features solid Volkswagen build quality, an intuitive touchscreen infotainment system, and abundant storage solutions ideal for families with children.

Best for: Families seeking spacious, practical transport; those prioritising interior flexibility and comfort; buyers wanting a sensible, well-equipped MPV with car-like driving dynamics.

Not ideal for: Drivers seeking premium driving engagement (consider the Ford S-Max); those wanting distinctive styling; buyers concerned about potential reliability issues on certain models.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Touran if: You're seeking spacious, practical family transport; prioritising interior flexibility and comfort; wanting a sensible, well-equipped MPV with car-like driving dynamics.

Consider alternatives if: You desire premium driving engagement (Ford S-Max), distinctive styling (Citroën Grand C4 Picasso), or wish to avoid potential reliability concerns.

Competitive Position: The Volkswagen Touran is an excellent compact MPV that stands out for its fantastically roomy interior and seating flexibility. Whilst the Ford S-Max offers more rewarding driving dynamics and the Citroën Grand C4 Picasso provides funky styling, the Touran's sensible approach, solid build quality, and car-like handling make it a highly competitive choice. It represents outstanding value for families prioritising practicality and comfort, with a wide range of engine options and trim levels to suit different budgets and requirements. The Touran's success in the market reflects its ability to deliver exactly what family buyers need.
