I absolutely love this car. It’s in great condition, drives beautifully and so far seems very economical especially on long distance journeys. I cannot fault it at all. It’s so robust, spacious but neat on the road as well. I am so pleased.

Really good versatile car. Plenty of room for the family and for days out. Lots of nice features.

A brilliant vehicle for those needing a proper family car without being limited to a hatch back like the golf (limited boot space) nor being forced to consider the much larger MPV like a Sharan with the large parking footprint. Touran is a quality piece of kit with reliability and economy from the 1.6 CR Diesel power plant. Accessibility is excellent all round, comfortable and commanding driver position also allied to good driving dynamics. Ideally fuel emissions could be lower to benefit from lower Road Tax as a recurring cost element to long term ownership.

Good all round family car. The7 seats have already been used and is arguably the best feature of the car. It is a 2009 car so if i had to complain it would be to have USB adaptors in the front and back.

Volkswagen Touran (2015-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Fantastically roomy interior | A Ford S-Max is more rewarding to drive |
| Plenty of seating flexibility | Dash layout starting to feel old |
| More car-like to drive than you might expect | Reliability issues on some models |
Quick Summary
The Volkswagen Touran (2015-present) is a compact MPV that prioritises practicality and space-for-money over style. Despite its modest exterior dimensions—not much larger than a Golf hatchback—it offers impressive interior space with seven seats as standard on all UK models. The third row folds away into the boot floor for occasional use, whilst the flexible seating arrangement provides up to 1,857 litres of cargo space when seats are folded flat. All models feature quality interiors with solid build quality, touchscreen infotainment, Bluetooth, and DAB radio, with higher trims offering additional conveniences like folding tables and storage drawers.
On the road, the Touran delivers a comfortable, supple ride with confident handling, though it prioritises comfort over driving excitement. A choice of petrol and diesel engines caters to different needs, with the 1.4-litre TSI petrol and 148bhp 2.0-litre TDI diesel representing the sweet spots for performance and efficiency. Running costs are reasonable, with diesel engines offering superior fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions. Service intervals are generous at 10,000 miles or annually, and fixed-price servicing is available at VW dealers. Insurance groups range from 9 to 21 of 50, keeping premiums affordable.
Best for: Families needing spacious, flexible transport; those prioritising practicality and interior room; buyers seeking a sensible, well-equipped MPV with car-like driving dynamics.
Not ideal for: Drivers seeking engaging, fun-to-drive handling; those wanting cutting-edge styling; buyers concerned about potential reliability issues on certain models.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Volkswagen Touran | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 35.5% | 4.3/5 |
| Citroen Grand C4 Spacetourer | 4/5 | 4.9/5 | 38.4% | 4.3/5 |
| Renault Grand Scenic | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 33.2% | 4.3/5 |
| Ford S-Max | 4/5 | 4.0/5 | 31.1% | 4.3/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Touran if: You need spacious, flexible family transport; you prioritise practicality and interior room; you seek a sensible, well-equipped MPV with car-like driving dynamics.
Consider alternatives if: You want engaging, fun-to-drive handling (Ford S-Max), cutting-edge styling (Citroen Grand C4 Spacetourer), or are concerned about potential reliability issues.
Competitive Position: The Volkswagen Touran is an excellent compact MPV and a strong contender in the family transport market. Whilst it may lack the driving engagement of the Ford S-Max or the funky styling of the Citroen Grand C4 Spacetourer, its fantastically roomy interior, seating flexibility, and car-like driving dynamics make it a highly sensible choice. The Touran's quality build, generous equipment levels, and reasonable running costs position it as a utilitarian machine that excels at its core purpose: providing spacious, comfortable family transport. It remains a very sensible buy for those prioritising practicality over driving thrills.
