Volvo C40 (2021-2024) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Relaxed and comfortable ride	Not as much fun to drive as it could be
Classy and restrained interior	The Volvo XC40 Recharge is a lot more practical
Very rapid acceleration	Volvo's subscription service is pricey

Quick Summary

The Volvo C40 (2021-2024) is a stylish, all-electric coupe-SUV crossover that combines dramatic design with practical performance. Built on the XC40 Recharge platform, it features twin electric motors delivering over 400 horsepower and a 78kWh battery offering 273 miles of range. The interior showcases Scandinavian restraint with bespoke touches, including a topographical-inspired dashboard and recycled plastic carpet. However, the sloping roofline compromises rear headroom and visibility, whilst the 413-litre boot is modest for the class. The C40 was rebranded as the EC40 in 2024 due to Volvo's revised electric SUV naming structure.

On the road, the C40 excels with a deeply impressive, comfortable ride and thumpingly powerful acceleration thanks to 660Nm of instant electric torque. The Google-developed infotainment system is responsive and kept current via over-the-air updates, whilst comprehensive safety features and Pilot Assist provide peace of mind. Running costs are minimal, with efficiency improvements over the XC40 Recharge particularly noticeable at motorway speeds. However, the car feels less engaging in corners, lacking the dynamic handling of sportier rivals. As a company car, benefit-in-kind tax advantages make it exceptionally economical.

Best for: Buyers seeking a relaxed, comfortable electric SUV with striking design, those valuing Scandinavian minimalism and cutting-edge technology, and company car users benefiting from low tax rates.

Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising engaging, sporty handling, those needing maximum boot space, or buyers seeking a more conventional SUV shape.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the C40 if: You value a relaxed, comfortable driving experience, appreciate Scandinavian design minimalism, seek cutting-edge electric technology, or benefit from company car tax advantages.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise engaging, sporty handling, require maximum boot space, or prefer a more conventionally shaped SUV.

Competitive Position: The Volvo C40 occupies a unique position in the electric SUV market, offering a distinctive coupe-like aesthetic and serene driving experience. Whilst it trails rivals like the Polestar 2 and Ford Mustang Mach-E in expert ratings and user satisfaction, its classy interior, impressive ride quality, and rapid acceleration provide genuine appeal. The C40 is best suited to buyers seeking relaxation over exhilaration, and those drawn to Volvo's understated Scandinavian philosophy. For sportier driving dynamics, the Mustang Mach-E is superior; for traditional luxury, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class offers more prestige.
