Volvo S60 (2010-2018) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
A refreshingly subtle alternative to a German executive saloon	A BMW 3 Series or Jaguar XE is more entertaining to drive
Superbly comfortable on long-distance drives	Rather a small boot
Fuel-efficient diesel engines	Entry-level diesel a little underpowered

Quick Summary

The Volvo S60 (2010-2018), the second-generation model, is a refined compact executive saloon that offers a compelling alternative to German rivals. Launched in 2010, it combines subtle, handsome styling with genuine practicality and comfort. The S60 was available with a choice of petrol and diesel engines, ranging from the economical 1.6-litre D2 diesel to the rapid 3.0-litre T6 petrol producing 300bhp. Most buyers opted for the mid-range diesel engines, particularly the D3 and D4, which balance performance with excellent fuel economy. The front seats are exceptionally comfortable, making the S60 an ideal companion for long-distance driving.

Whilst the S60 doesn't match the handling prowess of a BMW 3 Series or Jaguar XE on winding roads, it excels on motorways and A-roads with a composed, comfortable ride. The 380-litre boot is modest for the class, but running costs are reasonable, especially with diesel engines achieving 40-55mpg depending on specification. Safety equipment is comprehensive, including City Safety autonomous emergency braking as standard. As a used car, the S60 represents good value, typically undercutting prestige German alternatives whilst offering a more individual choice for buyers seeking comfort and refinement over outright sportiness.

Best for: Drivers prioritising comfort on long journeys, those seeking an individual alternative to German executive saloons, and buyers wanting fuel-efficient diesel engines with strong performance.

Not ideal for: Enthusiasts seeking engaging handling comparable to a BMW 3 Series, buyers requiring a large boot, or those wanting the entry-level D2 diesel for performance-focused driving.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the S60 if: You prioritise comfort on long journeys, seek an individual alternative to German executive saloons, or want fuel-efficient diesel engines with strong performance.

Consider alternatives if: You desire engaging handling comparable to a BMW 3 Series, require a large boot, or need the entry-level D2 diesel for performance-focused driving.

Competitive Position: The Volvo S60 (2010-2018) is a capable compact executive saloon that offers excellent value and comfort, though it trails its German rivals in overall ratings. Whilst the BMW 3 Series leads the class for handling and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Audi A4 offer stronger user satisfaction, the S60 distinguishes itself through superior long-distance comfort and a more individual design. It represents a sensible choice for buyers seeking refinement and practicality over outright sportiness, and typically undercuts prestige German alternatives on the used market.
