Customers say
The Volvo V40, particularly the 2019 model, is appreciated by owners for its stylish design and extensive features, making it a visually appealing option. However, there are concerns about reliability, specifically with clutches, which can be expensive to fix. While many find the value to be good, its discontinuation raises some doubts. Overall, drivers enjoy how it looks and the driving experience, but some aspects of usability, like the navigation system and controls, received criticism.

It's a lovely car to drive, 2L engine makes it quite powerful for motorway driving. Very comfortable seats and half leather trim. Kids are very happy to have their own cup holders I the back.

Fun and suprisingly nimble despite its age and size, very comfortable and despite age still fairly well equipped.

Volvo V40 (2012-2019) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Interesting alternative to Audi A3 or BMW 1 Series | Cramped interior and poor luggage capacity |
| Fuel-efficient diesel models | Not great to drive |
| Impressive safety equipment | No hybrid or electric option |
Quick Summary
The Volvo V40 (2012-2019) is a five-door hatchback that competes with the Audi A3, BMW 1 Series, and Mercedes-Benz A-Class. It offers an upmarket feel both inside and out, with a plush interior and smart styling that sets it apart from typical family hatchbacks. Available in various trim levels from basic ES to sporty R-Design and rugged Cross-Country variants, the V40 provides generous equipment and an excellent engine range. A mid-life facelift in 2016 brought further refinements, though production ended in 2019 with no direct replacement.
If safety is a priority, the V40 excels with impressive safety equipment and a reassuring, solid driving experience ideal for long journeys. Diesel models offer exceptional fuel economy, with the D2 achieving 60-65mpg and the D3 around 55mpg. However, the V40 is average to drive with uninspiring handling and an unsettled ride, particularly on larger-wheeled models. The cramped rear seats and modest 335-litre boot may disappoint those prioritising space. Service costs lean towards premium levels, though Volvo's service plans offer useful discounts.
Best for: Safety-conscious buyers seeking an upmarket alternative to mainstream hatchbacks, those valuing fuel efficiency with diesel engines, and drivers prioritising comfort on long journeys.
Not ideal for: Those needing spacious rear seating or large boot capacity, drivers seeking engaging handling and dynamic performance, or buyers wanting modern hybrid or electric options.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Volvo V40 | 3/5 | 4.5/5 | 38.4% | 4.2/5 |
| BMW 1 Series | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 36.8% | 4.4/5 |
| Audi A3 | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 37.8% | 4.4/5 |
| Volkswagen Golf Mk7 | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 36.8% | 4.5/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the V40 if: Safety is a priority, you value an upmarket feel and impressive equipment, or you seek fuel-efficient diesel engines with low running costs.
Consider alternatives if: You need spacious rear seating and boot capacity, prioritise engaging handling and dynamic performance, or require modern hybrid or electric options.
Competitive Position: The Volvo V40 (2012-2019) is an interesting alternative to premium rivals like the Audi A3 and BMW 1 Series, offering an upmarket feel and excellent safety credentials at a more accessible price point. However, it falls short of the Volkswagen Golf as an all-rounder, which delivers superior driving dynamics and practicality. The V40 excels for safety-conscious buyers and those valuing comfort and efficiency, but its cramped interior, average handling, and lack of modern powertrain options limit its appeal compared to more talented competitors. It remains a sensible choice for those prioritising safety and refinement over driving engagement.
