Volvo V60 (2018-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Crisp styling inside and out	VW Passat and Skoda Superb offer bigger boots
Supreme long-distance comfort	A BMW 3 Series Touring is nicer to drive
An interesting alternative to a BMW or Mercedes	The V60 is starting to feel its age

Quick Summary

The Volvo V60 is a sophisticated and stylish estate car that combines understated Scandinavian design with practical functionality. With 529 litres of boot space (expanding to 1,441 litres with rear seats folded), it offers excellent practicality for families and long-distance travellers. The current B4 mild-hybrid petrol engine delivers 194bhp with respectable fuel economy of 37.6-44.1mpg. Standard equipment is comprehensive, featuring Volvo's renowned safety technology including City Safety automatic braking, blind-spot monitoring, and a 360-degree parking camera system. The interior is refined and comfortable, with a 9.0-inch touchscreen and 12.3-inch digital instrument display, whilst passenger space in the rear exceeds many rivals.

At eight years into its lifecycle, the V60 remains a compelling choice for those prioritising comfort, design, and safety over outright performance. The two trim levels (Plus and Ultra) are well-equipped, though the £4,000 price difference warrants careful consideration. Running costs are reasonable, with insurance groups 29-30 and servicing around £290. Whilst not as engaging to drive as a BMW 3 Series Touring or as spacious as a Skoda Superb, the V60 offers a distinguished alternative that effortlessly combines style with substance.

Best for: Buyers seeking a premium, comfortable estate car with sophisticated design, excellent safety features, and refined long-distance capability; those who value Scandinavian design and understated elegance.

Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising maximum boot space, engaging driving dynamics, or cutting-edge technology; those seeking the latest generation estate car design.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the V60 if: You value premium design, exceptional comfort, comprehensive safety features, and a distinguished alternative to German rivals; you prioritise long-distance refinement and Scandinavian sophistication.

Consider alternatives if: You need maximum boot space, engaging driving dynamics, or the latest generation technology; you prefer the sportiness of a BMW 3 Series Touring or the practicality of a Skoda Superb.

Competitive Position: The Volvo V60 occupies a unique position in the premium estate car market, offering sophisticated design and comfort that rivals the BMW 3 Series Touring and Audi A5 Avant, whilst providing better value than both. However, it trails the BMW in driving engagement and the Skoda Superb in sheer practicality. At eight years into its lifecycle, the V60 remains a compelling choice for those seeking understated elegance and refined comfort, though potential buyers should be aware that newer generations of competitors are now available. Its strong safety credentials, premium interior quality, and excellent long-distance capability make it an excellent option for discerning buyers who value substance over sportiness.
