Volvo XC40 (2018-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Stylish, chunky looks | Rear seats not the most comfortable |
| Excellent safety kit | Electric version is expensive |
| Comfortable as well as good to drive | Infotainment system on earlier models a bit fiddly |
Quick Summary
The Volvo XC40 (2018-present) is an award-winning compact SUV that combines striking Scandinavian design with a tastefully appointed interior. Released in 2018, it features an elegantly designed cabin with high-quality materials, comfortable front seats with excellent lateral support, and a practical boot with no load lip. The XC40 prioritises comfort over dynamics, offering smooth bump isolation and reassuringly high grip levels, though the steering is light and lacks feedback. It's best considered a four-seater, as the middle rear seat is narrow and uncomfortable for longer journeys. An all-electric version joined the range in 2021 but was rebranded as the EX40 in 2024, leaving only mild-hybrid petrol models carrying the XC40 name.
Running costs are competitive, with mild-hybrid petrol engines delivering mid-forties mpg and older diesel models achieving close to 50mpg. Strong residual values make the XC40 affordable to own, particularly for company car drivers. The infotainment system was updated during the car's life to feature Google-developed software, significantly improving usability. Service intervals are annual or every 18,000 miles, whichever comes first, with optional service plans available. The XC40 combines desirability with genuine practicality, generous passenger space, and Volvo's renowned focus on crash avoidance and mitigation technology.
Best for: Buyers seeking a stylish, comfortable compact SUV with excellent safety credentials, those prioritising interior quality and Scandinavian design, and company car drivers benefiting from strong residual values.
Not ideal for: Those needing spacious rear seating for regular adult passengers, budget-conscious buyers seeking the most affordable option, or those wanting the latest infotainment technology on earlier models.

The Verdict
You should buy the XC40 if: You're seeking a stylish, comfortable compact SUV with excellent safety credentials, prioritise interior quality and Scandinavian design, or are a company car driver benefiting from strong residual values.
Consider alternatives if: You need spacious rear seating for regular adult passengers, are budget-conscious seeking the most affordable option, or want the latest infotainment technology on earlier models.
Competitive Position: The Volvo XC40 (2018-present) is a highly desirable compact SUV that stands out for its striking design and premium interior quality. Whilst rivals like the Audi Q3 and BMW X1 offer comparable expert ratings and value propositions, the XC40 distinguishes itself through superior user satisfaction and Volvo's renowned safety focus. The Range Rover Evoque matches the XC40's user rating but offers a sportier aesthetic, whilst the BMW X1 provides slightly better value deals. The XC40 remains the standout choice for those prioritising comfort, design, and safety over outright driving dynamics or budget considerations.

4.6 Overall rating
(13 reviews)A comfortable, roomy, solid car and a pleasure to drive. Seems good value for money and compares favourably with similar size vehicles
Great car. I added carplay and mudflaps. I had been concerned about whether the T3 engine would have enough power, but find that it is perfectly suited to the car and I’ll want for nothing. Very happy!
The R-Design Pro D4 AWD is a fantastic car, good looking, easy to drive, powerful and feels very planted. The auto box is smooth and D4 diesel engine quite and refined. Steering quite sensitive but then Ive been used to an aged Land Rover. The high-quality, minimalist interior definitely has the feel of a luxury car and is up there with BMW and Audi. The touch-screen infotainment console takes a little bit of getting used to but once you understand the basic principles its fairly easy to navigate. The high-end models are expensive but loaded with kit so you get what you pay for really. New to me so havent had the chance to drive off-road on the slippery stuff or tow with it, but Im assured its more than capable of doing both remarkably well. For an AWD, I would have preferred smaller alloys and larger profile all-weather tyres but most drivers of these cars would probably be using it in an urban environment.
Only because we are used to a powered drivers seat and keyless locking on our Toyota Rav4. Performance and handling are far greater on this car.
Its a great car from a reliable manufacturer. Worth the money.
