Volvo XC90 (2015-present) Pros and Cons

| Hugely comfortable over long distances | Infotainment system not the best |
| Practical, spacious and safe | No head-up display on all but top-spec Ultra model |
Quick Summary
The Volvo XC90 (2015-present) is a highly desirable, capable, and practical all-wheel-drive SUV, continuing the legacy of its popular first generation. Built on Volvo’s Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform, it offers exceptional interior flexibility with sliding middle-row seats and a spacious third row accommodating average-sized adults. Its generous boot capacity ranges from 301 litres with all seats up to a colossal 1,950 litres with rows folded, making it brilliantly practical for families. Regular updates, including overhauls in 2024 and 2025, ensure this premium-badged favourite remains fresh against rivals.
This latest XC90 generation relies on mild-hybrid B5 and plug-in hybrid T8 petrol powertrains, both paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox and all-wheel drive. The T8 boasts a claimed electric range of over 44 miles and offers impressive fuel economy (188-235mpg WLTP), while the B5 achieves 30.7-32.8mpg. Standard equipment is extensive, featuring a 11.2-inch infotainment display, Google Assistant, and comprehensive safety systems, earning a five-star Euro NCAP rating. Despite its size, it provides a cosseting and relaxing driving experience, embodying a charm and quality that makes it a lovely, albeit expensive, car to live with daily.
Best for: Families needing space, safety, and luxury; drivers prioritising comfort and relaxation over ultimate driving dynamics; those seeking a premium SUV with advanced hybrid powertrains.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising ultimate driving engagement (e.g., Porsche Cayenne, BMW X5); those on a strict budget (as it's an expensive machine); drivers who frequently navigate tight urban spaces.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

| Volvo XC90 | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 27.6% | 4.4/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the XC90 if: You're seeking a comfortable, relaxing, and practical SUV for families, prioritising safety and luxury, or looking for a premium SUV with advanced hybrid powertrains.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise ultimate driving engagement (e.g., Porsche Cayenne, BMW X5), are on a strict budget, or frequently navigate very tight urban spaces.
Competitive Position: The Volvo XC90 (2015-present) remains a strong contender in the premium seven-seat SUV segment, celebrated for its comfort, practicality, and safety. While its core platform is now a decade old, continuous updates and advanced hybrid powertrains keep it relevant. It offers a luxurious and relaxing ownership experience, standing out with its Scandinavian design and extensive standard equipment. However, rivals like the BMW X5, Audi Q7, and Mercedes-Benz GLE, being fundamentally newer, may offer sharper driving dynamics or more cutting-edge technology, making them compelling alternatives for some buyers. Despite this, the XC90's enduring charm and quality ensure its appeal for those seeking a refined and family-friendly SUV.

4.7 Overall rating
(26 reviews)XC90 is great value. Have had XcC60 and XC40, so wanted to try the XC90 for a change and it looked in a good condition for the price.
Drives lovely no issues at all nice family car
Bought an old 2005 XC90 to get back and forward to work in the rainy snowy winter in Scotland. (I have an Insignia Estate as my normal drive but was struggling in the winter weather). What a difference, great car comfortable safe and mpg not to bad averaging 37 to 38mpg. Insignia did 46mpg average. Cant see me using the Insignia even in summer, so will be selling the new car and keeping an old one 15 years older. All I can say is what a great car, in immaculate condition, full service history, very clean MOT history no advisories on last 5 MOTs. Fine a good one they are out there.
Ever since I bought my first I just love the car,it drives great and its the safest car on the road, would definitely recommend.
A lot of car for the money well equiped spacious comfortable and still looking good
