Volvo XC90 (2015-Present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Tastefully designed interior | Slightly noisy engines |
| Hugely comfortable over long distances | Infotainment system not the best |
| Practical, spacious and safe | No head-up display on all but top-spec Ultra model |
Quick Summary
The Volvo XC90 (second generation, introduced 2015) is a luxurious and practical seven-seat SUV, continuing the legacy of its highly successful predecessor. Updated in 2024 and 2025, it maintains its appeal against rivals like Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi, offering a modernised exterior and Volvo’s Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform. It excels in practicality, with a highly flexible interior featuring sliding middle-row seats and a spacious boot (301 litres with all seats up, expanding to 1,950 litres).
Power comes from mild-hybrid B5 or plug-in hybrid T8 petrol engines, both paired with all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic gearbox. While not as sporty as some rivals, it delivers a cosseting and relaxing driving experience, especially with optional active air suspension. Standard equipment is generous across Core, Plus, Plus Pro, and Ultra trims, including an 11.2-inch infotainment display and comprehensive safety features, earning a five-star Euro NCAP rating. Running costs are manageable for its class, with the T8 offering a claimed 44.1 miles of electric range.
Best for: Those seeking a comfortable, relaxing, and practical seven-seat SUV, buyers who appreciate a tastefully designed interior and strong safety features, or families needing flexible seating and generous boot space.
Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising raw sportiness and driving dynamics over comfort, those who need the absolute latest platform (as some rivals are newer), or buyers on a strict budget.

The Verdict
You should buy the XC90 if: You're after a comfortable, relaxing, and practical seven-seat SUV, value a tastefully designed interior and strong safety features, or need flexible seating and generous boot space for a family.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise raw sportiness and driving dynamics, require the absolute latest platform, or are on a strict budget.
Competitive Position: The Volvo XC90 (second generation) remains a highly desirable and capable premium SUV. While it's now a decade old, continuous updates ensure it offers excellent comfort, practicality, and safety. Its mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains provide manageable running costs for its class. Although newer rivals like the BMW X5, Audi Q7, and Mercedes-Benz GLE might offer more cutting-edge platforms, the XC90's blend of discreet luxury, quality, and family-friendly features makes it a compelling choice for those seeking a refined and versatile large SUV.

4.7 Overall rating
(26 reviews)XC90 is great value. Have had XcC60 and XC40, so wanted to try the XC90 for a change and it looked in a good condition for the price.
Drives lovely no issues at all nice family car
Bought an old 2005 XC90 to get back and forward to work in the rainy snowy winter in Scotland. (I have an Insignia Estate as my normal drive but was struggling in the winter weather). What a difference, great car comfortable safe and mpg not to bad averaging 37 to 38mpg. Insignia did 46mpg average. Cant see me using the Insignia even in summer, so will be selling the new car and keeping an old one 15 years older. All I can say is what a great car, in immaculate condition, full service history, very clean MOT history no advisories on last 5 MOTs. Fine a good one they are out there.
Ever since I bought my first I just love the car,it drives great and its the safest car on the road, would definitely recommend.
A lot of car for the money well equiped spacious comfortable and still looking good
