Customers say
The BMW 4 Series stands out for its stylish design and enjoyable driving experience across model years. Owners appreciate the car's value for money, nice drive, and the great specifications available. While the performance is generally praised, some drivers noted issues with power, particularly in certain convertible models and the wind flow when driving with the roof down. Overall, the 4 Series combines comfort, economy, and a sporty feel, making it a favored choice among enthusiasts despite minor critiques about pricing and interior design in some versions.

Disappointed with how much boot space the folding roof takes when down, leaving mimimal room for luggage. Am now considering a 3 series with canvas roof.

Convertibles 4 series have suspect rear window sealing issues which can lead to collection of rainwater and subsequent swishing noises as water cant easily escape due to intended water escape route being blocked by n underneath panel. Needs DIY to drain (or £80-100 to get done at a dealer), Non convertibles are excellent - although rather uninspiring interiors and dashes compared to class rivals. Well screwed together though and these cars stick to the road superbly even when pushed.

BMW 4 Series (2020-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Exceptionally good to drive, even by BMW's high standards | Controversial looks, in particular the grille |
| Superb interior quality | Convertible sacrifices some practicality |
| Brilliant infotainment system | Adaptive suspension costs extra |
Quick Summary
The BMW 4 Series (2020-present) is a true stand-alone model that builds upon the 3 Series platform with a lower ride height, wider rear axle, and more direct steering. Available as a Coupe, Convertible, or Gran Coupe, it delivers exceptional driving dynamics with a rigid two-door body shell that provides outstanding handling and refinement. The interior features premium quality materials, soft-touch leather trim, and BMW's intuitive iDrive infotainment system with voice recognition capabilities. Boot space ranges from 440 litres in the Coupe to 470 litres in the Gran Coupe, offering impressive practicality for its class.
The engine line-up caters to diverse needs, from the efficient 420d diesel with twin-turbocharging and mild hybrid technology achieving up to 61mpg, to the punchy 430i with 249hp, and the legendary 3.0-litre straight-six M440i xDrive. All engines pair with a smooth eight-speed automatic gearbox. Despite its controversial styling, particularly the distinctive grille, the 4 Series remains an exceptional driving machine with advanced safety systems, high levels of standard equipment, and excellent refinement. Running costs are competitive, with BMW's three-year fixed-price servicing plan available at £25 per month.
Best for: Drivers seeking premium driving dynamics, superior interior quality, and advanced infotainment in a stylish coupe or convertible package; those valuing refinement and handling excellence. Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising understated styling or maximum practicality; those seeking lower purchase prices or reluctant to invest in optional adaptive suspension.

The Verdict
You should buy the 4 Series if: You prioritise exceptional driving dynamics, premium interior quality, and advanced infotainment; you value refinement and handling excellence in a stylish coupe or convertible. Consider alternatives if: You prefer understated styling, maximum practicality, lower purchase prices, or wish to avoid optional adaptive suspension costs. Competitive Position: The BMW 4 Series (2020-present) stands at the pinnacle of the premium coupe segment, delivering exceptional driving dynamics and superior interior quality that surpass its rivals. Whilst the Audi A5 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class offer competitive alternatives, the 4 Series' outstanding handling, brilliant infotainment system, and jewellery-counter interior make it the driver's choice. Its controversial styling may divide opinion, but those who appreciate its distinctive design and exceptional talents will find it a joy to own and drive daily. The 4 Series represents outstanding value in the premium coupe market, particularly when considering its comprehensive standard equipment and refinement levels.
