Land Rover Freelander 2 (2006-2014) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Drives well on the road and off it | Reliability is not a strong point |
| Reasonably practical cabin | Unpopular front-wheel-drive model lacks off-road ability |
| The Freelander 2 is a very stable tow car | The 3.2-litre petrol is exceptionally thirsty |
Quick Summary
The Land Rover Freelander 2 (2006-2014) is a compact SUV that combines genuine off-road capability with on-road refinement and sophistication. This 'baby' Land Rover features a smart, upmarket cabin with comfortable seating for four adults, though rear legroom is modest compared to rivals like the BMW X3. The 755-litre boot expands to 1,670 litres with rear seats folded, and includes a reversible waterproof cover for muddy cargo. Whilst the boot is relatively narrow due to wheel arch intrusion, the Freelander 2 offers practical everyday usability alongside its remarkable go-anywhere promise.
Initially powered by a 229bhp six-cylinder petrol engine or a 2.2-litre 158bhp turbodiesel, the range evolved significantly. By 2010, the petrol was dropped and the diesel gained a 187bhp SD4 variant. The Freelander 2 is relaxing to drive with direct steering, comfortable ride quality, and good refinement. Trim levels range from entry-level S to luxurious HSE Lux, with equipment including alloy wheels, climate control, and leather upholstery on higher specs. Running costs are reasonable, particularly with the popular TD4 diesel engine achieving around 40mpg. However, potential buyers should invest in a pre-purchase inspection by a Land Rover specialist, as reliability is not a strong point.
Best for: Buyers seeking genuine off-road capability combined with on-road comfort, those requiring a stable tow car, and families wanting year-round mobility and adventure potential.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising maximum reliability, those needing maximum rear legroom, or those seeking the finest handling dynamics of premium rivals.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Land Rover Freelander 2 | 3/5 | 4.8/5 | 20.9% | 4.1/5 |
| Audi Q5 | 3/5 | 4.3/5 | 32.3% | 4.3/5 |
| BMW X3 F25 | 5/5 | 4.4/5 | 34.0% | 4.5/5 |
| Volvo XC60 | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 32.5% | 4.5/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Freelander 2 if: You seek genuine off-road capability combined with on-road comfort, require a stable tow car, or want year-round mobility and adventure potential.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum reliability, need maximum rear legroom, or seek the finest handling dynamics of premium rivals.
Competitive Position: The Land Rover Freelander 2 (2006-2014) is a distinctive compact SUV that stands apart from its rivals through genuine off-road prowess. Whilst the BMW X3 F25 and Volvo XC60 offer superior handling and refinement, and the Audi Q5 provides premium appeal, the Freelander 2 uniquely combines adventure capability with everyday practicality. Its lower expert rating reflects reliability concerns, but strong user satisfaction and competitive pricing make it an excellent choice for buyers valuing versatility and the promise of go-anywhere mobility over premium badge prestige.

4.8 Overall rating
(9 reviews)Still own a 2013 SD4 SE - Fantastic vehicle - more capable off road than you would believe and a pleasure to drive on road. SD is considerably more punchy than TD. Mine now on 130 000 miles have no intention of selling her - will pass her on to family and will look for a slightly younger one to replace her. Key is to maintain according to the recommendations - then problem free.
Having had 2 HSE models from 2007 to 2017 I found them to be excellent vehicles. I had no problems with them and they covered all the bases for my travel and passenger needs.
Having owned 2 from 2007 to 2017 I enjoyed reliability, comfort, good economy for its size and the pleasure of driving it. Replaced it with a (Freelander 3 )the Discovery Sport.
Roomy, comfortable, well made and a joy to drive. Car is equipped with all the bells and whistles that I need and hopefully will last a good few years.
Excellent car in every way. The only downside is my wife wont let me drive it.
