Audi A5 (2024-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Tech-focused interior | Not as sharp to drive as a BMW 3 Series |
| Wide range of powertrains including diesel | Digital displays might prove overwhelming |
| Covers long distances with ease | Too many functions rely on touchscreen |
Quick Summary
The latest Audi A5 (2024-present) controversially redefines its badge, taking over from the A4 as a premium family hatchback, a result of a short-lived Audi naming strategy. Despite its 'saloon' moniker, it offers practical advantages with a 445-litre boot (417 litres with quattro) and generous rear passenger space, making it competitive against premium saloon rivals. Its interior is dominated by an 11.9-inch digital cluster and a 14.5-inch central touchscreen, delivering excellent graphics and speed, though the heavy reliance on touch controls might not suit all drivers.
Available with petrol, diesel, and upcoming plug-in hybrid powertrains, all paired with an automatic gearbox, the A5 excels as a refined long-distance cruiser. The 2.0-litre TDI diesel impresses with real-world economy close to 50mpg and strong performance, aided by an MHEV Plus mild hybrid system. While it prioritises comfort and control over razor-sharp dynamics, its quality, capability, and starting price around £45,000 position it as a compelling choice in the premium segment, with strong residual values helping offset initial costs.
Best for: Buyers seeking a premium, comfortable, and capable long-distance cruiser; those who appreciate a tech-focused interior and practical hatchback configuration in a premium package; drivers looking for efficient diesel or upcoming PHEV options in a refined car.
Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising the sharpest handling dynamics (e.g., BMW 3 Series); those who dislike touchscreen-heavy interfaces and prefer physical controls; buyers who might be confused by Audi's naming strategy or expect a traditional saloon.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Audi A5 | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 33.1% | 4.4/5 |
| BMW 3 Series | 5/5 | 4.3/5 | 36.2% | 4.5/5 |
| Mercedes-Benz C-Class | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 35.9% | 4.4/5 |
| BMW 4 Series | 5/5 | 4.5/5 | 31.9% | 4.5/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the A5 if: You're looking for a refined, comfortable, and capable premium family car that excels at long distances, offers good practicality with its hatchback design, and you appreciate a high-tech interior.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise the sharpest driving dynamics, prefer more physical controls over touchscreens, or find Audi's recent naming conventions confusing.
Competitive Position: The Audi A5 (2024-present) successfully carries forward the legacy of the A4, offering a distinctive premium package in the executive car segment. Its hatchback configuration provides a practical edge over traditional saloons, while its refined ride, efficient powertrains (especially the diesel MHEV), and high-quality interior make it a strong contender. While it might not offer the ultimate driving thrill of a BMW 3 Series, its blend of comfort, technology, and capability positions it well against rivals like the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and BMW 4 Series, particularly for those seeking a sophisticated long-distance cruiser.

(34 reviews)Happy with the car and very helpful nice owner! Highly recommend
Car is good value for money and well finished off
Perfect model with ideal specs (any model or trim) for our needs. Also fantastic build quality and if any repairs required not as expensive as you would think!
2009 A5 S-Line 3.0TDI Quattro Absolute beast of a car. Handles incredibly well for its size and has no issues with getting you to the speed limit in very little time. Huge boot which is only held back by the small tailgate on the Coupe. Averages around 40mpg on motorway runs and around 34mpg on short journeys but the smiles you get from it on the way make up for that. A serious car for serious torque lovers, would definitely recommend.
Quality Audi vehicle. Stylish practical 5 door coupe that in quattro form has stunning capability and very safe road holding.
