BMW 3 Series (2019-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Sharp steering and agile handling | Sporty suspension makes for a firm ride |
| Fuel-sipping diesels and plug-in hybrid | Not as roomy as some cheaper mainstream rivals |
| Beautifully finished cabin | Restricted engine choice if you want a manual gearbox |
Quick Summary
The BMW 3 Series (2019-present) is a benchmark mid-size executive saloon that combines understated style, rock-solid quality, and an upmarket image with a genuinely sporting drive. This generation offers an excellent balance of practicality and performance, with a spacious rear for tall adults and a 480-litre boot (375 litres on the 330e plug-in hybrid). The beautifully finished interior features plush materials and exceptional fit and finish, whilst the sharp, linear steering and stiff suspension deliver crisp, precise handling with excellent grip and traction. An estate 'Touring' version is also available for those needing extra boot space.
The 3 Series offers an impressive range of engines, including efficient diesels (318d, 320d, 330d, M340d), responsive petrols (318i, 320i, 330i, M340i), and the popular 330e plug-in hybrid with up to 63 miles of electric-only range. Running costs are competitive, with real-world fuel economy ranging from around 55mpg for the 318d to 65mpg for the 330e when regularly charged. All engines feature timing chains, reducing long-term maintenance costs. The main trade-off is the firm ride quality, even on SE and Sport models, though optional adaptive suspension on M Sport Plus variants significantly improves comfort. As a used car, the 3 Series represents excellent value for those seeking a premium, engaging driving experience with practical family credentials.
Best for: Drivers seeking a premium executive saloon with sharp handling, company car users, families wanting a sporty yet practical car, and those prioritising fuel efficiency through diesel or hybrid options.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising maximum interior space over sportiness, those sensitive to firm suspension, or those seeking a manual gearbox (limited availability).

The Verdict
You should buy the 3 Series if: You're seeking a premium executive saloon with sharp handling, want a sporty yet practical family car, prioritise fuel efficiency, or are a company car user.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum interior space over sportiness, are sensitive to firm suspension, or require a manual gearbox.
Competitive Position: The BMW 3 Series (2019-present) remains the benchmark in the executive saloon segment, offering the sharpest handling and most engaging driving experience of its rivals. Whilst the Audi A4 matches it on user ratings and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class offers premium appeal, the 3 Series edges ahead with its superior expert rating and excellent value proposition. Its beautifully finished cabin, efficient engine options (including the impressive 330e plug-in hybrid), and genuinely sporting character make it the best choice for drivers who want their executive saloon to be genuinely fun to drive. The main compromise is the firm ride quality, but this is the price of the car's exceptional handling. For those willing to accept this trade-off, the 3 Series is unquestionably the finest small executive saloon available.

The BMW 3 Series is consistently praised for its excellent performance, handling, and comfort features across all model years. Drivers enjoy the sporty driving experience, stylish design, and well-appointed interiors. However, some owners express concerns about repair costs and the varying levels of luxury depending on options and models. While many appreciate the reliability, others note issues with electronics and the use of plastic parts in certain areas.

What people say
The 2007 BMW 3 Series offers a great balance of performance, comfort, and reliability. The interior feels premium for its age, and the car still drives very smoothly. I think it’s excellent value for money compared to other models like the Audi A4 or Mercedes C-Class. Everything works as it should, and it feels solid on the road. It might not have modern tech like Apple CarPlay, but for a 2007, it’s more than enough.
Well specified car. Good features. Unusual these days in being a 2 door coupe. Strong engine. Could be quicker. Nothing a remap wouldn’t sort out.
Excellent all rounder, great fuel economy and style. Much recommended
The car had the features that I wanted it was reasonably priced but it wasn't very clean especially outside needed some paintwork here and there and a little more TLC just wasn't for me.
Great car, drives well. Could do with a fast charging though...
