Customers say
The BMW 4 Series stands out for its stylish design and enjoyable driving experience across model years. Owners appreciate the car's value for money, nice drive, and the great specifications available. While the performance is generally praised, some drivers noted issues with power, particularly in certain convertible models and the wind flow when driving with the roof down. Overall, the 4 Series combines comfort, economy, and a sporty feel, making it a favored choice among enthusiasts despite minor critiques about pricing and interior design in some versions.

Disappointed with how much boot space the folding roof takes when down, leaving mimimal room for luggage. Am now considering a 3 series with canvas roof.

Convertibles 4 series have suspect rear window sealing issues which can lead to collection of rainwater and subsequent swishing noises as water cant easily escape due to intended water escape route being blocked by n underneath panel. Needs DIY to drain (or £80-100 to get done at a dealer), Non convertibles are excellent - although rather uninspiring interiors and dashes compared to class rivals. Well screwed together though and these cars stick to the road superbly even when pushed.

BMW 4 Series (2020-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Exceptionally good to drive, even by BMW's high standards | Controversial looks, in particular the grille |
| Superb interior quality | Convertible sacrifices some practicality |
| Brilliant infotainment system | Adaptive suspension costs extra |
Quick Summary
The BMW 4 Series (2020-present) is a true stand-alone model that builds upon the 3 Series platform with a lower ride height, wider rear axle, and more direct steering. Available as a Coupe, Convertible, or Gran Coupe, it combines exceptional driving dynamics with premium quality and practicality. The Coupe offers 440 litres of boot space, whilst the Gran Coupe's hatchback provides 470 litres, delivering estate car-level room. The Convertible features a fabric roof and remains one of the best-handling four-seat convertibles available.
The engine range spans from the efficient 420i with a 2.0-litre turbo petrol to the legendary 3.0-litre straight-six M440i xDrive. The 420d diesel offers impressive economy at up to 61mpg, whilst the 430i and 440i provide enhanced performance. All engines pair with an eight-speed automatic gearbox. BMW's iDrive infotainment system is intuitive and voice-controlled, whilst the interior showcases exceptional quality with soft-touch leather and precision detailing. Running costs are reasonable, with fixed-price servicing available at £25 monthly, and residual values remain strong.
Best for: Drivers seeking premium driving dynamics, superior interior quality, and advanced infotainment in a stylish coupe or convertible package, particularly those valuing performance and refinement.
Not ideal for: Buyers concerned about controversial styling, those requiring maximum practicality without compromise, or those unwilling to pay extra for adaptive suspension upgrades.

The Verdict
You should buy the 4 Series if: You prioritise exceptional driving dynamics, premium interior quality, and advanced infotainment, and appreciate stylish coupe or convertible design with strong performance credentials.
Consider alternatives if: You are concerned about controversial styling, require maximum practicality without additional costs, or prefer traditional saloon proportions.
Competitive Position: The BMW 4 Series (2020-present) stands as the benchmark in its segment, delivering superior driving dynamics and interior quality that surpass rivals like the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Audi A5. Whilst the E-Class offers additional space, the 4 Series excels in engagement and refinement. Its exceptional handling, brilliant infotainment system, and jewellery-counter interior make it the standout choice for enthusiasts seeking a premium coupe or convertible. Despite controversial styling, its desirability as a used purchase remains strong, backed by excellent residual values and comprehensive servicing options.
