Customers say
The BMW 4 Series stands out for its stylish design and enjoyable driving experience across model years. Owners appreciate the car's value for money, nice drive, and the great specifications available. While the performance is generally praised, some drivers noted issues with power, particularly in certain convertible models and the wind flow when driving with the roof down. Overall, the 4 Series combines comfort, economy, and a sporty feel, making it a favored choice among enthusiasts despite minor critiques about pricing and interior design in some versions.

Disappointed with how much boot space the folding roof takes when down, leaving mimimal room for luggage. Am now considering a 3 series with canvas roof.

Convertibles 4 series have suspect rear window sealing issues which can lead to collection of rainwater and subsequent swishing noises as water cant easily escape due to intended water escape route being blocked by n underneath panel. Needs DIY to drain (or £80-100 to get done at a dealer), Non convertibles are excellent - although rather uninspiring interiors and dashes compared to class rivals. Well screwed together though and these cars stick to the road superbly even when pushed.

BMW 4 Series (2020-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Exceptionally good to drive, even by BMW's high standards | Controversial looks, in particular the grille |
| Superb interior quality | Convertible sacrifices some practicality |
| Brilliant infotainment system | Adaptive suspension costs extra |
Quick Summary
The BMW 4 Series (2020-present) is a true stand-alone model that builds upon the 3 Series platform with a lower ride height, wider rear axle, and more direct steering. Available as a Coupe, Convertible, or Gran Coupe, it combines exceptional driving dynamics with premium quality and practicality. The Coupe offers 440 litres of boot space, whilst the Gran Coupe's hatchback provides 470 litres, delivering estate car-level room. The Convertible features a fabric roof and remains one of the best-handling four-seat convertibles available.
The engine range spans from the efficient 420i with a 2.0-litre turbo petrol to the legendary 3.0-litre straight-six M440i xDrive. The 420d diesel, equipped with twin-turbocharging and mild hybrid technology, delivers impressive power and economy, achieving up to 61mpg. All engines pair with a smooth eight-speed automatic gearbox. BMW's iDrive infotainment system is intuitive and feature-rich, whilst the interior showcases exceptional quality with soft-touch leather and precision engineering. Running costs are reasonable, with a fixed-price servicing plan available at £25 per month.
Best for: Drivers seeking a premium, engaging coupe with superb handling and interior quality, those wanting a practical four-seat convertible, and buyers valuing advanced infotainment and safety systems.
Not ideal for: Those sensitive to controversial styling, particularly the distinctive grille, or buyers prioritising maximum practicality over performance-oriented design.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| BMW 4 Series | 5/5 | 4.8/5 | 36.0% | 4.6/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the 4 Series if: You're seeking a premium, engaging coupe with superb handling and interior quality, want a practical four-seat convertible, or value advanced infotainment and safety systems.
Consider alternatives if: You are sensitive to controversial styling, particularly the distinctive grille, or prioritise maximum practicality over performance-oriented design.
Competitive Position: The BMW 4 Series (2020-present) stands as an exceptional premium coupe, matching the BMW 5 Series F10 in expert and user ratings whilst offering superior driving dynamics and a more contemporary design. It outperforms the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Audi A5 Mk2 in expert ratings, delivering exceptional handling, refinement, and infotainment. Whilst the Audi A5 Mk2 offers slightly better value deals, the 4 Series' superior driving experience, jewellery-box interior, and comprehensive standard equipment make it the standout choice for enthusiasts prioritising engagement and premium quality over badge prestige alone.
