BMW 4 Series (2020-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Exceptionally good to drive, even by BMW's high standards | Controversial looks, in particular the grille |
| Superb interior quality | Convertible sacrifices some practicality |
| Brilliant infotainment system | Adaptive suspension costs extra |
Quick Summary
The BMW 4 Series (2020-present) stands as a distinct model from its 3 Series sibling, featuring a lower ride height, wider rear axle, and more direct steering for exceptional driving dynamics. Available as a Coupe, Convertible, and the more practical Gran Coupe, it offers a superb interior with high-quality materials and BMW's intuitive iDrive infotainment system. The engine lineup ranges from the punchy 2.0-litre 420i petrol to the legendary 3.0-litre straight-six M440i, alongside efficient diesel options like the 420d with mild-hybrid technology, all paired with a slick eight-speed automatic gearbox.
Practicality is good for its class, with 440 litres of boot space in the Coupe and 470 litres in the Gran Coupe, plus decent rear legroom. Running costs are competitive, with the 420d diesel offering up to 61mpg and a long range per tank. BMW also provides fixed-price servicing plans for new cars. Despite its controversial grille design, the 4 Series is praised for its refinement, advanced safety, high standard equipment levels, and overall engaging driving experience, making it a joy to own and drive daily.
Best for: Drivers prioritising an exceptional driving experience, superb interior quality, and advanced infotainment. Those seeking a refined coupe or convertible, or a practical yet stylish hatchback (Gran Coupe).
Not ideal for: Buyers who dislike the controversial grille design, or those who need maximum practicality (as the Convertible sacrifices some space). Those who prefer adaptive suspension as standard rather than an extra cost option.

The Verdict
You should buy the 4 Series if: You're seeking an exceptional driving machine with superb interior quality and an intuitive infotainment system. It's also ideal if you desire a refined coupe, convertible, or a practical hatchback (Gran Coupe) with strong performance and good running costs.
Consider alternatives if: You dislike the controversial grille design, require maximum rear practicality (especially in the Convertible), or prefer adaptive suspension as standard rather than an extra cost option.
Competitive Position: The BMW 4 Series (2020-present) is a premium contender in its segment, offering an outstanding blend of driving dynamics, interior luxury, and advanced technology. While its styling may be divisive, its engaging performance, high-quality cabin, and intuitive infotainment system set it apart. It competes strongly against rivals like the Audi A5 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class by providing a more driver-focused experience, especially with its range of potent and efficient engines. The availability of the Gran Coupe also adds a layer of practicality not always found in two-door rivals.

(24 reviews)Convertibles 4 series have suspect rear window sealing issues which can lead to collection of rainwater and subsequent swishing noises as water cant easily escape due to intended water escape route being blocked by n underneath panel. Needs DIY to drain (or £80-100 to get done at a dealer), Non convertibles are excellent - although rather uninspiring interiors and dashes compared to class rivals. Well screwed together though and these cars stick to the road superbly even when pushed.
The 435D XDrive M Sport, with the right upgrades has everything you need in a vehicle. Comfort, economy, stylish, and performance.
