BMW 4 Series Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Exceptionally good to drive, even by BMW's high standards	Controversial looks, in particular the grille
Superb interior quality	Convertible sacrifices some practicality
Brilliant infotainment system	Adaptive suspension costs extra

Quick Summary

The BMW 4 Series is a true stand-alone model designed for drivers who prioritise a sharper driving experience and sleeker styling over the practicality of the 3 Series saloon. Available as a Coupe, Convertible, or Gran Coupe, it features a lower ride height, wider rear axle, and more direct steering tune. The Gran Coupe offers two extra doors and a wide-opening hatchback boot lid, delivering 470 litres of luggage space—almost estate car levels of room. Despite its stylish design, the 4 Series remains practical, with comfortable rear seating and decent boot capacity across all variants.

The engine line-up ranges from the efficient 420i with a 2.0-litre turbo petrol to the ballistically powered M440i featuring a legendary 3.0-litre straight-six engine. The 420d diesel, now discontinued, offered impressive economy at up to 61mpg. All engines pair with a slick-shifting eight-speed automatic gearbox. The Coupe's rigid two-door body shell delivers exceptional driving talents with impeccable ride, direction changes, and vibration suppression. The Convertible, whilst slightly less taut, remains one of the best-handling four-seat convertibles available. BMW's iDrive infotainment system is intuitive and comprehensive, complemented by premium interior quality and advanced safety systems.

Best for: Drivers seeking an engaging, premium coupe with exceptional driving dynamics, superb interior quality, and advanced technology, particularly those who value style and performance over maximum practicality.

Not ideal for: Buyers concerned about controversial styling, those prioritising maximum boot space, or those seeking a budget-friendly option, as adaptive suspension and premium specification add considerable cost.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the 4 Series if: You seek an engaging, premium coupe with exceptional driving dynamics, superb interior quality, and advanced technology, particularly if you value style and performance over maximum practicality.

Consider alternatives if: You are concerned about controversial styling, prioritise maximum boot space, or seek a budget-friendly option, as adaptive suspension and premium specification add considerable cost.

Competitive Position: The BMW 4 Series stands as a truly exceptional driving machine, outperforming rivals in driving dynamics and refinement. Whilst the Audi A5 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class offer comparable premium quality and technology, the 4 Series delivers superior engagement and handling. Its higher expert rating reflects its exceptional driving talents, advanced infotainment, and jewellery-counter interior quality. Though some may find its distinctive grille controversial, those who appreciate its design will find a car that combines performance, luxury, and practicality in equal measure, making it a compelling choice in the premium coupe segment.
