| Brilliant infotainment system | Adaptive suspension costs extra |
Quick Summary
The BMW 4 Series (2020-present) is a true stand-alone model that builds upon the 3 Series platform with a lower ride height, wider rear axle, and more direct steering. Available as a Coupe, Convertible, or Gran Coupe, it offers exceptional driving dynamics with a rigid body shell that provides impeccable handling and ride quality. The engine line-up ranges from the efficient 420i with a 2.0-litre turbo petrol to the legendary 3.0-litre straight-six M440i, all paired with a smooth eight-speed automatic gearbox. The Convertible features a fabric roof for minimal wind noise, whilst the Gran Coupe adds rear doors and a hatchback for enhanced practicality with 470 litres of boot space.
The 4 Series excels in refinement, featuring a jewellery-counter interior with soft-touch leather trim, BMW's intuitive iDrive infotainment system, and advanced safety features. The 420d diesel delivers impressive fuel economy of up to 61mpg with excellent real-world efficiency, whilst the 430i and M440i offer more spirited performance. Running costs are manageable with BMW's three-year fixed-price servicing plan at £25 per month, including one free MOT and seasonal health checks. Despite its controversial grille styling, the 4 Series remains a highly desirable and engaging daily driver for those seeking premium performance and luxury.
Best for: Drivers seeking exceptional handling and driving dynamics, those valuing premium interior quality and infotainment, and buyers wanting a stylish coupe or convertible with genuine performance credentials.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising understated styling, buyers seeking maximum practicality without compromising on performance, or those unwilling to invest in optional adaptive suspension for optimal ride quality.

The Verdict

Whilst the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Audi A5 offer competitive user ratings and value propositions, the 4 Series' superior expert rating and engaging performance characteristics make it the standout choice for driving enthusiasts. (24 reviews)Customers say
The BMW 4 Series stands out for its stylish design and enjoyable driving experience across model years. Owners appreciate the car's value for money, nice drive, and the great specifications available. While the performance is generally praised, some drivers noted issues with power, particularly in certain convertible models and the wind flow when driving with the roof down. Overall, the 4 Series combines comfort, economy, and a sporty feel, making it a favored choice among enthusiasts despite minor critiques about pricing and interior design in some versions.

What people say
Convertibles 4 series have suspect rear window sealing issues which can lead to collection of rainwater and subsequent swishing noises as water cant easily escape due to intended water escape route being blocked by n underneath panel. Needs DIY to drain (or £80-100 to get done at a dealer), Non convertibles are excellent - although rather uninspiring interiors and dashes compared to class rivals. Well screwed together though and these cars stick to the road superbly even when pushed.
The 435D XDrive M Sport, with the right upgrades has everything you need in a vehicle. Comfort, economy, stylish, and performance.
