BMW 5-Series (2026) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Spacious and beautifully trimmed interior	Still don't know how it drives on standard passive suspension
Shedloads of tech	Saloon bodystyle hampers boot access
Sensational to drive on adaptive suspension	One too many gimmicks

Quick Summary

The BMW 5-Series remains the standard-bearer in the executive car class, offering a compelling blend of luxury, technology, and driving refinement. This eighth-generation saloon is available in both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive formats, with petrol engines featuring mild-hybrid or plug-in hybrid technology. The range begins with the 520i's turbocharged 2.0-litre engine delivering 205bhp, progresses through the 530e plug-in hybrid with 295bhp, and culminates in the formidable 550e with 482bhp. All versions provide 520 litres of boot space, whilst the Touring estate offers 570 litres.

The 5-Series excels in practicality and comfort, with generous legroom and headroom for executive travel. Its sophisticated infotainment system features a 14.9-inch central screen and 12.3-inch digital display, complemented by the retained iDrive rotary controller. The adaptive suspension delivers an impressive balance of cushioning and sharpness, enabling the car to flow through bends with poise despite its size. Running costs are reasonable, with the 520i achieving up to 48.7mpg, whilst plug-in hybrids offer electric-only ranges of up to 63 miles. However, the saloon bodystyle limits boot access, and the car features several gimmicks, including synthetic engine sounds that can be disabled.

Best for: Executives seeking premium quality, cutting-edge technology, and refined driving dynamics in a spacious saloon; those valuing comfort and sophistication over SUV trends.

Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising traditional button-heavy interfaces, those requiring maximum boot accessibility, or those seeking a more minimalist cabin design.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the 5-Series if: You're an executive seeking premium quality, cutting-edge technology, and refined driving dynamics in a spacious saloon, or you value comfort and sophistication over SUV trends.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise traditional button-heavy interfaces, require maximum boot accessibility, or seek a more minimalist cabin design.

Competitive Position: The BMW 5-Series is arguably the finest executive saloon available today, combining sensational quality with cutting-edge technology and polished driving dynamics. Whilst rivals like the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Audi A6 offer comparable luxury and user ratings, the 5-Series distinguishes itself through its superior driving experience on adaptive suspension and its comprehensive technology suite. The Jaguar XF delivers engaging dynamics but lacks the 5-Series' refinement and tech prowess. Though saloon bodystyles have fallen from favour due to SUV popularity, the 5-Series proves the three-box format remains a tremendously compelling choice for discerning buyers.
