BMW 5 Series (2010-2016) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Exceptional all-round ability | Fairly firm ride on larger alloy wheels |
| Satisfying to drive and comfortable to travel in | Epic running costs of high-performance M5 |
| The 520d hits the sweet spot for performance and economy | Not all models have split/folding rear seats |
Quick Summary
The BMW 5 Series (F10 generation, 2010-2016) is lauded as an exceptional all-rounder executive saloon, offering a refined, rewarding, and comfortable driving experience over long distances. With a minor facelift in 2013, this model boasts a spacious interior for both driver and passengers, including generous legroom in the back. Boot space is competitive, at 520 litres for the saloon and 560 litres for the Touring estate, though split-folding rear seats were an optional extra.
Its range of petrol and diesel engines are noted for being powerful, smooth, fuel-efficient, and low on emissions, with the 520d achieving 60-65mpg in real-world conditions. Even entry-level SE models are well-equipped, featuring BMW's intuitive iDrive controller and, ideally, the excellent eight-speed automatic gearbox. While service costs can be high at main dealerships and run-flat tyre replacements expensive, the 5 Series generally offers strong build quality, reliability, and for many models, modest road tax.
Best for: Drivers seeking an exceptional all-round executive saloon, comfortable long-distance travel, powerful yet efficient engines, and those who appreciate strong build quality and intuitive technology.
Not ideal for: Buyers sensitive to a firm ride (especially on larger alloys), those concerned about the epic running costs of high-performance M5 models, or those who require split-folding rear seats as standard.

The Verdict
You should buy the 5 Series if: You're seeking an exceptional all-round executive saloon, value comfortable long-distance travel, want powerful yet efficient engines, and appreciate strong build quality and intuitive technology.
Consider alternatives if: You are sensitive to a firm ride (especially on larger alloys), are concerned about the epic running costs of high-performance M5 models, or require split-folding rear seats as standard.
Competitive Position: The BMW 5 Series (F10, 2010-2016) stands out in the executive saloon segment for its exceptional all-round ability, combining a refined and rewarding driving experience with a spacious and practical interior. While some rivals might offer slightly softer rides or standard features like split-folding seats, the 5 Series counters with powerful yet efficient engines, robust build quality, and the convenience of BMW's iDrive system. Its availability on the used market makes it a highly enticing prospect for those seeking a premium car with a balance of performance, comfort, and, for many variants, reasonable running costs.
