BMW 8 Series (2018-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Quick and handles well | Not as exciting as a Porsche 911 |
| xDrive 4x4 models perform in all weathers | Not as luxurious as a Mercedes S-Class Coupe |
| Choice of convertible, coupe, and four-door body styles | Coupe and convertible are cramped in the back |
Quick Summary
The BMW 8 Series (2018-present) is a striking grand tourer that straddles the middle ground between the overtly sporting Porsche 911 and the sumptuous Mercedes S-Class Coupe. Reviving a name first introduced in 1990, this modern iteration serves as BMW's flagship performance model and halo product. Available as a two-door coupe, convertible, or four-door Gran Coupe, it offers a choice of body styles to suit different needs. The M8 Competition variant represents the fastest and most powerful road car BMW has ever produced, delivering truly breathtaking acceleration and performance.
The 8 Series delivers a reasonably cushioned ride with accurate steering and lusty performance across the range. The regular coupe offers 420 litres of boot space, whilst the Gran Coupe provides 440 litres for improved practicality. Running costs vary significantly depending on the model chosen, with the diesel 840d achieving around 40mpg, the 840i around 30mpg, and the M8 Competition realistically managing only 22mpg. All variants incur £475 annual road tax, though more powerful petrol models face a substantial £1,850 first-year rate. Insurance costs are considerable, with even the least powerful model sitting in group 44 of 50, whilst servicing represents another significant expense, though BMW offers fixed-price plans from £30 per month.
Best for: Drivers seeking a sophisticated grand tourer combining performance with everyday usability, those wanting a middle ground between a 911 and S-Class Coupe, and buyers who value choice in body styles and powertrains.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising maximum excitement (like a Porsche 911), ultimate luxury (like a Mercedes S-Class Coupe), or requiring spacious rear seating in coupe and convertible variants.

| Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe | 4/5 | 4.9/5 | 31.2% | 4.5/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the 8 Series if: You seek a sophisticated grand tourer combining performance with everyday usability, want a middle ground between a 911 and S-Class Coupe, or value choice in body styles and powertrains.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum excitement like a Porsche 911, ultimate luxury like a Mercedes S-Class Coupe, or require spacious rear seating in coupe and convertible variants.
Competitive Position: The BMW 8 Series occupies an intriguing middle ground in the premium grand tourer market. Whilst it may not match the Porsche 911 for outright thrills or the Mercedes S-Class Coupe for sumptuous luxury, it offers a compelling blend of performance, handling, and versatility. The M8 Competition delivers genuinely impressive acceleration, and the availability of convertible, coupe, and four-door Gran Coupe variants provides flexibility that rivals cannot match. However, the coupe and convertible's cramped rear seating limits practicality for those regularly carrying passengers. Overall, the 8 Series represents an attractive choice for discerning buyers seeking a well-rounded, quick, and capable grand tourer.

4.7 Overall rating
(3 reviews)The car was what i was looking for Except for the red interior
the car is very highly specified and well finished. Pricewise it holds with other brands in the market. It is not for everyone as it could seem too imposing.
Very stylish four door family saloon with good acceleration and low fuel consumption .
