BMW i3 (2013-2022) Pros and Cons

Pros Cons
Distinctive looks really stand out Early versions have a short range
Nimble handling for an EV Stiff and unsettled ride
Appealing cabin design An expensive car to buy

Quick Summary

The BMW i3 (2013-2022) is a distinctive and forward-thinking electric city car, notable for its innovative carbon-fibre construction and futuristic styling. Available as a pure electric vehicle or a Range Extender (REX) with a small petrol generator, it offers a premium experience in a compact package. Inside, it has space for four adults, but the quirky rear-hinged doors can be awkward in tight spaces, and the 270-litre boot is small. Despite its age, the high-quality, sustainably-sourced interior materials ensure the cabin still feels modern and upmarket.

Driving the i3 is an engaging experience thanks to its 168bhp electric motor, rear-wheel-drive layout, and light weight, making it agile and fun around town. However, the ride can feel stiff on uneven roads. Early models had a limited range of 80-100 miles, but battery upgrades over the years improved this significantly to over 180 miles. Running costs are low, but the i3 remains a relatively expensive used purchase compared to rivals that offer more practicality and a longer range for the money, making it a choice often led by the heart over the head.

Best for: Buyers who prioritise standout design, a premium cabin, and an engaging city driving experience over maximum practicality or range.

Not ideal for: Drivers needing five seats, a large boot, a comfortable long-distance cruiser, or the best value-for-money EV on the market.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the i3 if: You are captivated by its unique design, want a premium and stylish interior, and value a fun, agile driving experience for urban use.

Consider alternatives if: You need to carry five people, require a large boot, prioritise a comfortable ride on long journeys, or want the longest possible range for your budget.

Competitive Position: The BMW i3 is a unique proposition in the used EV market, blending premium appeal and innovative engineering with low running costs. While its high purchase price, limited practicality, and stiff ride count against it when compared to more conventional and often cheaper rivals like the Renault Zoe or Nissan Leaf, its distinctive character and engaging drive make it a compelling choice for those who want to stand out.

Customers say

The BMW i3 stands out for its innovative design and quality engineering, earning high praise from drivers who enjoy its unique style and ease of handling. Many appreciate its low running costs and fun driving experience, particularly for daily trips. However, some drivers feel it is pricier than comparable electric vehicles and have expressed concerns over the car's reliance on charging infrastructure, particularly with older battery options that can limit range. Overall, while the i3 delivers a futuristic driving experience, potential buyers should be mindful of its charging needs and cost.

The i3 is certainly not a Run of The Mill EV. Lots of old school BMW signature style with BMW quality engineering set it aside from the rest. Looks fantastic especially some of the more Avant-garde interiors.

Brilliant car. We have had a nicely spec-ed 2014 i3 for 4 years and this 2019 i3s is everything that was (tardis-like interior, fun to drive) but more (quicker, more range, better handling at speed). We love it already!

The car itself is fine, the problem for me was it had the older battery I think 60ah which is no use for any distance other than just going around your own area. I decided not to buy it because I need at least the 94ah battery which came out later
