BMW i3 (2013-2022) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Distinctive looks really stand out | Early versions have a short range |
| Nimble handling for an EV | Stiff and unsettled ride |
| Appealing cabin design | An expensive car to buy |
Quick Summary
The BMW i3 (2013-2022) is a distinctive and forward-looking electric city car that remains modern and engaging despite its age. Launched in 2013, it features an innovative carbon-fibre passenger cell and aluminium chassis, delivering nimble handling and responsive performance with 168bhp and 184lb ft of torque. Early models offered 80-100 miles of range, whilst later battery upgrades extended this to up to 192 miles. A range extender (REX) variant with a petrol generator is also available, boosting range by approximately 70 miles. The i3 is well-equipped with premium features, including LED daytime running lights, navigation, DAB radio, and Bluetooth connectivity, with the 2017 i3s variant offering enhanced performance and sportier dynamics.
Whilst the i3 excels in design, technology, and driving engagement, it faces notable limitations. The rear-hinged doors require front-door clearance for rear-seat access, making tight parking spaces problematic. The 270-litre boot is modest, though rear seats fold to extend capacity. The ride can feel stiff on longer journeys, and the car commands a premium price compared to longer-range rivals like the Renault Zoe. Running costs are low for pure electric models with no VED, minimal charging costs (approximately £135 annually for 10,000 miles), and reduced servicing requirements. However, insurance and tyre costs can be higher than expected. As a used car, the i3 appeals to those prioritising distinctive design and premium quality over practicality and range.
Best for: Buyers seeking a premium, distinctive electric city car with engaging handling, stylish design, and low running costs; those with access to home charging and primarily urban driving needs.
Not ideal for: Those requiring maximum range, frequent rear-passenger transport, tight parking spaces, or budget-conscious buyers seeking better value than comparable rivals.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BMW i3 | 3/5 | 4.2/5 | 33.7% | 4.1/5 |
| Kia Soul EV | 4/5 | 5.0/5 | 25.7% | 4.3/5 |
| Renault Zoe | 3/5 | 4.7/5 | 33.5% | 4.1/5 |
| Nissan Leaf | 3/5 | 3.8/5 | 31.2% | 4.1/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the i3 if: You prioritise distinctive design and premium quality, seek engaging handling and stylish interiors, have access to home charging, and primarily drive in urban environments.
Consider alternatives if: You require maximum range, frequently transport rear passengers, park in tight spaces, or seek better value than comparable rivals like the Renault Zoe.
Competitive Position: The BMW i3 (2013-2022) is a premium electric city car that stands apart through distinctive design, engaging dynamics, and high-quality interiors. However, it often costs significantly more than rivals with superior range and practicality. The Kia Soul EV offers better value and user satisfaction, whilst the Renault Zoe provides comparable range at a lower price. The Nissan Leaf offers a more conventional alternative. The i3 remains compelling for those captivated by its bold styling and engineering, but budget-conscious buyers seeking practical electric transport will find better alternatives elsewhere.

4.2 Overall rating
(13 reviews)Customers say
The BMW i3 stands out for its innovative design and quality engineering, earning high praise from drivers who enjoy its unique style and ease of handling. Many appreciate its low running costs and fun driving experience, particularly for daily trips. However, some drivers feel it is pricier than comparable electric vehicles and have expressed concerns over the car's reliance on charging infrastructure, particularly with older battery options that can limit range. Overall, while the i3 delivers a futuristic driving experience, potential buyers should be mindful of its charging needs and cost.

What people say
Excellent car for in town driving only negative is the total range which is a big limit, but the features and car condition are amazing
The i3 is certainly not a Run of The Mill EV. Lots of old school BMW signature style with BMW quality engineering set it aside from the rest. Looks fantastic especially some of the more Avant-garde interiors.
The back doors cannot be opened until the front doors are opened
I like the security of the rang extender can’t understand why more manufactures don’t do this
Brilliant car. We have had a nicely spec-ed 2014 i3 for 4 years and this 2019 i3s is everything that was (tardis-like interior, fun to drive) but more (quicker, more range, better handling at speed). We love it already!
