BMW i3 (2013-2022) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Distinctive looks really stand out	Early versions have a short range
Nimble handling for an EV	Stiff and unsettled ride
Appealing cabin design	An expensive car to buy

Quick Summary

The BMW i3 (2013-2022) is a distinctive and forward-looking premium electric city car that remains modern and engaging despite its age. Featuring an innovative carbon-fibre passenger cell and aluminium chassis, the i3 delivers nimble handling and responsive performance with 168bhp and 184lb ft of torque. Early models offered 80-100 miles of range, whilst later battery upgrades extended this to up to 192 miles. A Range Extender variant with a petrol generator provided an additional 70 miles, making it a versatile option for those concerned about charging infrastructure.

The i3 excels as a premium urban runabout with engaging driving dynamics, stylish interiors featuring natural fibres, and comprehensive technology including navigation, DAB radio and Bluetooth. Running costs are low, with zero VED for pure electric models and minimal charging costs (approximately £135 annually for 10,000 miles). However, the i3 is relatively expensive compared to rivals with longer range, features rear-hinged doors that require careful parking, and a stiff ride that can prove tiring on longer journeys. The 270-litre boot is modest, though rear seats fold to extend cargo space.

Best for: Buyers seeking a premium, distinctive electric city car with engaging handling, those with access to home charging, and drivers prioritising style and design over maximum practicality.

Not ideal for: Budget-conscious EV buyers, those needing maximum range, drivers who regularly carry rear passengers in tight parking spaces, or those seeking a comfortable ride on longer journeys.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the i3 if: You prioritise distinctive design and premium feel, enjoy engaging urban driving dynamics, have access to home charging, and value style and innovation over maximum practicality and range.

Consider alternatives if: You're budget-conscious, need maximum range, regularly carry rear passengers in tight spaces, or prefer a more comfortable ride on longer journeys.

Competitive Position: The BMW i3 (2013-2022) is a premium electric city car that stands apart through its distinctive styling and engaging handling. Whilst rivals like the Nissan Leaf and Kia Soul EV offer superior range and practicality at lower prices, the i3 appeals to those seeking a characterful, well-designed premium EV. The Kia Soul EV particularly offers better value with longer range, whilst the Renault Zoe provides a more practical alternative. However, for buyers enchanted by the i3's bold design and premium interior, the ownership experience justifies the premium price, making it an excellent choice for discerning urban drivers.
