BMW i3 (2013-2022) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Distinctive looks really stand out | Early versions have a short range |
| Nimble handling for an EV | Stiff and unsettled ride |
| Appealing cabin design | An expensive car to buy |
Quick Summary
The BMW i3 (2013-2022) is a distinctive and captivating electric city car, available in both pure electric and Range Extender (REX) forms, which uses a two-cylinder petrol engine as a generator. Designed from the ground up as a zero-emissions vehicle, it features an innovative carbon-fibre passenger cell and thermoplastic panels on an aluminium chassis. Despite its age, it maintains a modern feel and look, with battery improvements extending its range over time, making it an interesting, albeit relatively expensive, used car option.
While offering excellent space in the front, the i3's practicality is limited by its four-seat configuration and unique rear-hinged doors that can be quirky in tight parking spaces. The boot is a compact 270 litres, though rear seats fold for more cargo. Driving dynamics are a highlight, with a 168bhp electric motor providing nimble handling and a 0-62mph time of around seven seconds. Early models had a shorter range, but later upgrades pushed it up to 192 miles. Running costs are low due to its EV nature, with no VED for pure electric models and potentially reduced servicing needs, though insurance and tyre costs should be checked.
Best for: Drivers seeking a distinctive, premium electric city car, those prioritising nimble handling and low running costs, or buyers appreciating innovative design and engineering.
Not ideal for: Buyers needing maximum practicality (especially rear passenger access in tight spaces or large boot capacity), those requiring a long electric range from early models, or budget-conscious buyers looking for the cheapest EV option.

The Verdict
You should buy the i3 if: You're seeking a distinctive, premium electric city car, prioritise nimble handling and low running costs, or appreciate innovative design and engineering.
Consider alternatives if: You need maximum practicality (especially rear passenger access in tight spaces or large boot capacity), require a long electric range from early models, or are a budget-conscious buyer looking for the cheapest EV option.
Competitive Position: The BMW i3 (2013-2022) stands out in the compact premium EV market with its unique design, innovative carbon-fibre construction, and engaging driving dynamics. While it offers low running costs and a well-appointed interior, its higher price point on the used market, limited four-seat practicality, and sometimes stiff ride mean it faces strong competition from more conventional and often longer-range rivals. It appeals most to those who value its distinctive character and premium feel over pure practicality or the lowest possible cost.

4.3 Overall rating
(24 reviews)The i3 is certainly not a Run of The Mill EV. Lots of old school BMW signature style with BMW quality engineering set it aside from the rest. Looks fantastic especially some of the more Avant-garde interiors.
The back doors cannot be opened until the front doors are opened
Brilliant car. We have had a nicely spec-ed 2014 i3 for 4 years and this 2019 i3s is everything that was (tardis-like interior, fun to drive) but more (quicker, more range, better handling at speed). We love it already!
The car itself is fine, the problem for me was it had the older battery I think 60ah which is no use for any distance other than just going around your own area. I decided not to buy it because I need at least the 94ah battery which came out later
Super easy to drive, super cheap to run, terrific fun, no tax, what’s not to like?
