DS DS 7 Crossback (2017-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Distinctive looking alternative to the SUV mainstream | Doesn't drive as well as a BMW X3 |
| Practical and roomy for people and luggage | Remote and uninvolving steering |
| Economical plug-in hybrids, if you recharge often | Firm ride on standard suspension |
Quick Summary
The DS DS 7 Crossback (2017-present) is a distinctively French family SUV that stands apart from mainstream German rivals through its flamboyant styling, quirky cabin, and sophisticated infotainment system. With 555 litres of boot space and comfortable seating for five, it offers excellent practicality without compromising on passenger room. The plug-in hybrid E-Tense models are particularly impressive, delivering low emissions and impressive electric-powered range, whilst maintaining the same spacious interior as their petrol and diesel counterparts. The 2022 facelift introduced a redesigned 12-inch touchscreen, revised digital instruments, and new high-resolution parking cameras.
Whilst the DS 7 Crossback may not match the sharp handling of a BMW X3 or the prestige appeal of an Audi Q5, it compensates with bold design, practical versatility, and advanced technology. The steering is remote and the standard suspension can feel firm, though higher-spec models with Active Scan suspension offer a more cushioned ride. For private buyers, the BlueHDi 130 diesel delivers reasonable economy around the high 40s mpg, whilst plug-in hybrid owners who recharge regularly can achieve spectacular fuel efficiency. Insurance groups are slightly above average, starting at 18E, and servicing is fixed-price across all DS franchised dealers.
Best for: Francophiles seeking an alternative to mainstream German SUVs, buyers prioritising distinctive design and practicality, and company car drivers interested in plug-in hybrid tax benefits.
Not ideal for: Drivers seeking the sharpest handling dynamics, those wanting premium German badge appeal, or buyers requiring a firm ride on standard suspension.

The Verdict
You should buy the DS 7 Crossback if: You're a Francophile seeking an alternative to mainstream German SUVs, prioritise distinctive design and practicality, or are a company car driver interested in plug-in hybrid tax benefits.
Consider alternatives if: You seek the sharpest handling dynamics, want premium German badge appeal, or require a comfortable ride on standard suspension.
Competitive Position: The DS DS 7 Crossback is a bold and distinctive alternative in the premium SUV segment, offering excellent practicality and user satisfaction. Whilst the BMW X3 edges ahead on driving dynamics and overall expert rating, and the Audi Q5 and Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class offer more traditional prestige appeal, the DS stands out for its unique design language and value proposition. For buyers seeking something different from the German mainstream, the DS 7 Crossback delivers impressive practicality, advanced technology, and economical plug-in hybrid options that rival competitors. Its higher percentage of good and great deals (36.9%) reflects strong user satisfaction and excellent value in the used market.
