Exactly what I wanted for a very good price. I had considered the prestige model but in the end decided I wouldn’t use the additional features which had also had mixed reviews.

Great value for money. The Prestige is well packaged, comfortable, great acceleration and looks fab.

Seems good value with a lot of extras worth paying extra for Duster Extreme. 1.3 litre engine much quieter than the Journey 1 litre model I test-drived. Have owned Dacia Logan for 10 years from new with very few problems. Can't fault Dacia value for money.

The Duster was good value for money, just what I was looking for a small 4x4 .

Dacia Duster (2012-2018) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Extremely cheap to buy and run | Rough and ready finish |
| The cabin is practical | The cheapest models are short of equipment |
| Choice of 2WD and 4WD | Not great to drive |
Quick Summary
The Dacia Duster (2012-2018) is a rugged, utilitarian small SUV that prioritises affordability and practicality over style and refinement. Launched at just £8,995, it massively undercuts rivals like the Nissan Qashqai, offering genuine value for money. Available in both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive forms, it provides decent room for five adults and a generous boot of 475 litres (rising to 1,636 litres with seats folded). The choice of a 104bhp 1.6-litre petrol or 109bhp 1.5-litre diesel engine keeps things simple, with the diesel achieving around 50mpg in real-world driving.
The Duster's no-nonsense approach extends to its equipment levels, with basic Access trim lacking air-conditioning and alloy wheels. However, a 2014 facelift and 2018 updates improved the range, introducing cruise control, trip computers, and sat-nav on higher trims. Whilst the driving experience is uninspiring—with vague steering, body roll, and a wallowing suspension—the uncomplicated mechanicals mean servicing is inexpensive and straightforward. For budget-conscious buyers seeking a practical, unpretentious small SUV without concern for on-road performance, the Duster represents excellent value.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers, those seeking a practical and affordable small SUV, and drivers needing all-wheel-drive capability at a low price point.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising driving dynamics, premium cabin quality, or comprehensive equipment on entry-level trims.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dacia Duster | 3/5 | 4.7/5 | 33.2% | 4.3/5 |
| Suzuki Vitara | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 32.5% | 4.3/5 |
| Nissan Qashqai | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 32.0% | 4.4/5 |
| Fiat Panda | 3/5 | 4.3/5 | 36.3% | 4.0/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Duster if: You're on a tight budget, seeking a practical and unpretentious small SUV, or need all-wheel-drive capability at an affordable price.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise driving dynamics, premium cabin quality, or comprehensive equipment on entry-level trims.
Competitive Position: The Dacia Duster (2012-2018) stands out as the most affordable option in the small SUV segment, offering exceptional value for money. Whilst it lacks the driving refinement of the Nissan Qashqai and Suzuki Vitara, and the premium feel of rivals, its straightforward practicality, low running costs, and choice of 2WD and 4WD make it ideal for budget-conscious buyers. The Fiat Panda offers better value deals, but the Duster provides more space and SUV capability. For those willing to sacrifice on-road performance for affordability and utility, the Duster remains a sensible choice.
